Sophia is an excellent tutor. She is unlike most tutors only answer questions you ask, but she also cares about your study strategies and how you perform on the exams. My child got an A on the exam from a D in AP Europe.
Thank you for those kind words, Linda! Both you and your daughter are a pleasure with whom to work! She is receptive and enthusiastic about her learning. She has a passion to do well.
Sophia was God sent! My daughter was scheduled to write an in class "Personal Essay" the following day. Sophia was all over it, helping her plan and conceive of the essay. Great find!
My son had 5 lessons with Ms. Sophia. She is very experienced with the Montgomery county school system. She evaluated my son at the first meeting and selected different reading materials based on his level. She was always well prepared coming to each session. She is patient, caring, well organized, and dedicated. I liked her teaching style and my son worked well with her.
Sophia is a very knowledgeable and patient tutor! Despite our 5th grade daughter's reservations about being tutored, Sophia was able to connect with her, hone in on exactly what she needed, and provide a very productive session. We were very satisfied with Sophia and would definitely recommend her to others!
Thank you for the kudos! I enjoyed working with your daughter.
She is excellent, my son's grade have improved a lot, and he got his confidence back as well. I wish all teachers were like her!
Thank you so much! Your son is a pleasure with whom to work! He is both receptive and cooperative.
Sophia A. is fabulous - great command of modern Greek. When my daughter is a bit older we will likely try this again.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Please note that I am a retired certified MCPS teacher. I am more than familiar with and have tutored the ACT, as well as the SAT and PSAT. In addition, I have tutored for Kaplan and am familiar with their strategies and approaches.

Teaching history is my passion. I have taught American History for many a year and find it exhilarating when the "light goes on" and the significance of our past is related to our present and perhaps future.
Since dyslexia differs for each person dependent on the severity of the condition effectiveness of instruction must vary accordingly. Although the core difficulty lies in reading words because of a difficulty in processing and manipulating sounds, some students with dyslexia are able to learn early reading and spelling tasks, However the dyslexic student encounters difficulties when the more challenging problems of complex language skills, such as grammar, textbook material and essay reading and writing are required. I have taught dyslexic students in county schools for a number of years, as well as one-on-one situations, as well as having completed a course in teaching these special students. I am quite versed in the strategies needed for these students to succeed.
I taught elementary school for 17 years in Montgomery County Public Schools, teaching every subject from Language Arts-to-Science and loved every minute of it. I enjoy teaching elementary students as they are like sponges: absorbing every tidbit with which they are presented. In addition, they possess a love of learning which has yet to be diluted by the conformities experienced in middle and high school. They also possess a unique perspective of the world around them, which allows for creativity uninhibited by an adult perspective. My original BS degree was in Education Grades 1-8. Subsequently, I went on to being certified in and teaching Reading, English and History through high school for 17 years.
I have taught the whole gamut of reading,English and writing to reluctant students, students with disabilities, gifted students and IB students. The three blended subjects are my passion.
Teaching history is my passion. It is gratifying to impart a sense of the workings of our contemporary world as it relates to what has gone before our time. I have taught World History, European History, Ancient and American History for many a year and find it exhilarating when the "light goes on" and the significance of our past is related to our present and perhaps future.

I am a retired Montgomery County Public School Educator and have participated in numerous after school study groups, and study skill organizational groups during my tenure of active teaching. My strategies for instilling/teaching study skills include graphic organizers which set the tone: setting priorities, goal setting, student created study plan, calendar to aid in time management for both short-term and long-term assignments. I also have the student create an observation sheet as to how their time is utilized to manage same for optimum educational benefits. It is also important to emphasize the importance of a conducive area for study where distractions do not impede the process.
Learning to use academic vocabulary and mnemonic devices, as well as seriously monitoring homework, are essential strategies. It is also essential to make the student aware of the lecture/information presentation of the instructor/teacher once topic has been introduced: compare/contrast, sequencing events, problem solving, cause and effect. Being aware of these styles is an essential aid to taking notes. Some students work best beginning with a to-do list as they begin the study session; some do best when tackling what they consider the most difficult task first; after that everything seems easier.
I majored in and am certified to teach World History. I have taught the full gamut of the subject, and all skill ranges from Honors, through IB and SAT Subject Tests.
I am a retired MCPS educator certified in English, History, and Reading grades 1-12. I have taught in the county schools for 30 years and continue to substitute. I also have tutored for Kapkan. Certification in English and Reading implies a proficiency and courses in writing as the subjects are intertwined. I have a passion for the 3 combined subjects and delight in getting my students to share the passion and thus the skills of gleaning enough meaning from their reading to be able to express themselves in writing. My motto is to teach learning to learn and that embodies comprehension. Without true comprehension, including inferences and critical thinking skills communication through the written word is for naught.
