My name is Mr.D and I hold three degrees from Accredited Colleges. One degree is a B.S. in Sociology, the second is in Elementary Education, for which I have just renewed my Advanced Professional Certificate good through June, 2014, and lastly is my Master's degree for curriculum and instruction in the Elementary School. My certificate authorizes me to teach first through eighth grade. My undergraduate degrees were from Towson University and My Masters was from Coppin State University.

My experience with tutoring started before I was a teacher over 25 years ago when I could tutor students who couldn't make it to school because they were either in the hospital or at home recovering. I did this in Anne Arundel County while I was a substitute school teacher for a few years. Through my 15 years of teaching I took on a few students that I taught and helped them before or after school with any clarification they may have needed for the previous lessons. For the past few summers I have tutored high school students as they prepared for their S.A.T.(Scholastic Aptitude Test).

My teaching style is dependent on the learning style of the individual I am tutoring, but I do combine many of them so I can pinpoint the one that works best for them. I would most likely try to stay away from the most popular teaching style and that's direct teaching style. This is when the teacher does all the talking and it's usually boring and the teacher does most, if not all the talking. The next one I would use would be the demonstrator or personal model style. Here there would be more interaction with the student and the tutor would give the student a chance to try the different skills that are being taught. They could do this in a number of ways. One would be visually show they understand the concept, acknowledge through saying they understand it, and if it takes demonstrating it in a kinestetic or tactile way then that would be the best way for the student to grasp it. He emphasized being prepared and putting your notes on index cards to guide you through your speech. In addition during the first speech we had to try to prove something about that topic and have the challenge of a rebuttal. Research of the topic was key in convincing your audience that what you said was true. Presentation to your audience convinces them that the words coming out of your mouth were the truth.

Our children need to experience education that enables them to demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required for lifelong learning and becoming productive citizens in an ever-changing global society. I have the time and knowledge to lend to students what I have taught, but on a much smaller scale that I feel will meet with a much higher return of success. Just remember this one thing when picking a tutor. When I come through the door, whether it was at the library or at another neutral place did you feel I cared about you and your education or something else? If you picked that it seemed like I cared then that is the single most important quality a person can have as a motivation to teach you. For most of my teaching career(17 years)I have been teaching elementary school. I enjoy it and I am most proficient in this area. Math is an exact subject that leaves no room for error. 2+2 =4. There's no getting around it. It will always be that until some genius proves otherwise. Math is also practical and is used for everyday needs. Counting, weighing, knowing shapes, money, and a host of other mathematical terminology that will be needed in your daughter's everyday life. I can make it fun because Math doesn't have to be boring. There are all kinds of Math games that can teach you and you won't even know they're teaching concepts from math that you'll need for the test. Mr. D

Phonics is the basic pronunciation of words using the sounds of blends, consonants, and vowels. I currently work with a program called Hooked on Phonics and the program has had wonderful results. I've been a special educator for little over 3 years. Dyslexia is included with the umbrella of special education. There is a test to see if the child is dyslexic or to see if it's letter reversal. In any case it would have to be rectified for the student to be successful.

I have always been involved in sports. I have played football, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse competitively for most of my life. Most of my friends say baseball is too slow to enjoy. They just don't know about the strategies and guess work involved in baseball. I have watched the Baltimore Orioles for 44 years so I have been through the winning years and now the losing years. Baseball can be compared to life. You are going to have some good years and some bad. You have to accept that. If the team gets away from the basics then the results will be a losing season. Your team has to have talent and luck too and that's where it becomes very entertaining. Too many times we forget baseball is a game. The key is to relax and do your best and you'll reach the objective of baseball which is to enjoy.

I have been teaching and coaching over 30 years. What distinguishes me from many coaches is that I have coached at all levels. During the last two seasons, I've coached my middle school team to the championship. I believe winning is important, but proper technique, conditioning, and sportsmanship are equally emphasized. The experience and knowledge of most sports gives me an opportunity to do an excellent job of tutoring.

I am very familiar with lacrosse. It's been 35 years since I first picked up my first lacrosse stick. I fell in love and haven't looked back since. After playing in High School and College, I went on to play in clubs until I turned 50. Meanwhile I coached at every level of lacrosse and also started a youth league so our High School could become competitive with the stronger scholar athletes in the area schools. I am currently the head coach of a middle school team in Northwest Baltimore. In our third year we reached the championship game. In addition to this, I attend lacrosse conferences and keep the attitude that if you teach the students well they will enrich your life ten fold. That is what has happened to me. The scholar athletes appreciate after awhile the discipline, and hard work that goes into building a championship lacrosse program. It takes hard work and dedication.

ASVAB

ASVAB is about applications to everyday math problems that you would use in practical ways. The problems consist of word problems, all 4 operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The objective is to pull the knowledge you have obtained over the years and condense it so you can be proficient enough to do well at this test.

Satisfied Parent

Mr. D is an excellent tutor, dedicated to my son's best interests. My son has come a long way in approximately three months. He is no longer fearful of reading and does not run when asked to. Ian is more confident with doing his work- reading. Mr. D has worked on his confidence. We still have a long way to go but the plan is to be above his grade level, after much discouragement from other avenues. I appreciate the assistance and would encourage any parent seeking his assistance to do so.

Doesn't give up or lose his patience

Mr. D. has never given up my daughter even during the most trying times. This marking period she made distinguished honor roll. The first time she has made the honor roll, ever, and she makes distinguished. I really do not believe she would be doing this well if it hadn't been for Mr. D. Thanks for all your time and efforts.

My son is behind in reading, writing, and math skills. Recently he has been diagnosed with a learning disability. Our plan is to give him this support to increase his success in all school areas. Mr. D has been very patient and helpful in assisting him and me. Both of their loves for history has been great in helping him understand the importance of math, reading, and writing!

Great Tutor.

I sign my son up in May for Tutoring, I chose Francis D because he is a certified special Ed teacher, my son has ADD with learning difficulties. My son has reading difficulties and reads at a lower grade level. Mr D seems very patient when working with my son. My son seems to enjoyed working with Mr. D and in doing so I'm sure my son will soon be on grade level.
