About Richard

I taught for 38 years before I retired. I have worked with students with all abilities and really enjoyed each student. In one year I worked with students from students whose IQ was higher than mine and students who were less able. I believed all students, regardless of ability, are precious creations to be cherished and nourished, and I will do both to the best of my ability. I absolutely love teaching.
I've taught all grades from third to eighth grade. I specialized in teaching mathematics. I once tutored the valedictorian of Hereford High School in the Standard Test of Written English. I always throughout my teaching career tutored my students before and after school. I volunteered to teach enrichment classes to lower grade levels. In my fifteenth year of teaching, I was given a special certificate by the County Executive for my service to the youth of Baltimore County. I was given a standing ovation by the parents at an eighth grade graduation after I retired. I tutored a student for three years in my spare time whose IQ was close to 200. Her father was amazed that I taught her so much algebra at the age of 7. I've found that age is largely irrelevant. The best time to learn any "foreign language" including algebra is when you're young. After all 2 apples and 3 apples is 5 apples is basically the same problem as 2 a cubed plus 3 a cubed is 5 a cubed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've taught all elementary grades. During all of my thirty-eight years teaching, I worked before and after school to give remediation and enrichment to individual students. Few teachers possess my knowledge. I absolutely love tutoring.

Phonics

I taught for 38 years before I retired. I've always loved phonics. It is the foundation of reading, and spelling. Through phonics, I took one five year old from not be able to read cat to reading fluently on the sixth grade level. When I taught reading, I had each student read orally. I wrote down any phonetic mistake the student made, and provided individual remediation.
