After a few years in a graduate program, I'm excited to get back into teaching and tutoring! After a few years in a graduate program, I'm excited to get back into teaching and tutoring! I grew up outside of Chicago, earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry with a double-major in economics at the University of Pittsburgh, spent a year abroad in Krakow, Poland, as a Fulbright Fellow, then went on to earn a PhD at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, California. My PhD work focused on artificially assembling bacterial communities, and on making new protein-based materials for pancreatic cell culture.

I have some experience as a teacher and tutor. I spent the summer after my freshman year of college as a physics and chemistry tutor, then spend my sophomore through senior years in college as a teaching assistant in organic chemistry. At the same time, I served as a speech coach for a high school speech team in Pittsburgh. In graduate school, I spent the first year as a teaching assistant for college general chemistry, then a quarter of my second year as a teaching assistant for a public-speaking course designed to help scientists communicate more effectively.

My favorite part of teaching is watching when a student has a sudden flash of insight, and what was previously incomprehensible suddenly makes sense.

I hold a PhD in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology, with a focus in synthetic biology. While I was at Caltech, I was a teaching assistant for college general chemistry, and received good reviews.

I worked as a weekly opinions columnist for my undergraduate institution's daily newspaper, wrote a stage play that was performed at Caltech, was a speech coach in Pittsburgh, and was a teaching assistant for a course dedicated to teaching scientists to communicate more effectively.

While my formal studies have largely been in the sciences, history is my true passion, and most of my leisure reading has been on American History. I also got a 5 on the AP American History exam many years ago.
