About Caleb

My name is Caleb, and I hold a degree in Mathematics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I have a passion for applying math and statistics to everyday situations, and I love to share that passion with others. Many generations of my family have been professional educators, and I have experience tutoring my fellow classmates as a Teacher's Assistant for Calculus Courses at UMBC. My degree and exposure to education allows me to devise a focused lesson plan to hone in on the areas of improvement that will lead to my students' success in the shortest amount of time possible.

Having used calculus and advanced statistics on a daily basis for the last seven years, I have a strong intuitive understanding of how these subjects work at the fundamental level. I have received high marks and honors for academic excellence in mathematics in my high school and college coursework. My affinity for the subject allows my teaching approach to adapt to the specific needs of my student's and provide fresh insights that go beyond how they are taught in the classroom. I can help students at every level from Algebra 1 to Differential Equations.

Many people feel shut out from mathematics because they feel incapable of learning the subject. In my experience, this is never the truth. I know that once someone understands how mathematics and statistics can help them in a tangible and practical way, they are given the motivation to acquire the skills they need to reach a complete understanding of the subject. It is my mission to help someone find their personal connection to math and give them the inspiration to succeed.

If you are struggling finding the motivation to learn math or statistics at any level, I invite you to have a conversation on how we can develop a personalized and focused lesson plan to help put you on the path to success in these subjects.

I am currently working as a web application developer, and I can also help you with learning the ins-and-outs of developing a website or web application front to back. I can teach you everything from how to design a website with CSS or Sass to how to create an API service using Django or Nodejs. Please send me a message if you are looking to get started on how to become a web developer, or if you need a second set of eyes to help with your current project.

I look forward to talking with you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Most of my tutoring done through WyzAnt is helping students with Algebra 1 and 2. Several members of my family are high school and college Math teachers, and through their experience I learned many of the common challenges students encounter when learning algebra for the first time. I use this knowledge to identify the tools my students will need to approach the subject in the way that works best for them.

Algebra 2

Most of my tutoring done through WyzAnt is helping students with Algebra 1 and 2. I use this knowledge to identify the tools my students will need to approach the subject in the way that works best for them.

Angular

Angular is my preferred framework for building high performance front-ends for my web applications. Angular is also a key component to the Ionic framework, which I use to build native applications for iOS and Android devices.

Calculus

Before I graduated high school, I had completed Calculus I, II, and Multi-Variable Calculus. During college, every course I took towards my Math degree relied on calculus. Combine this with my tutoring experience, I have been involved with teaching and learning
Calculus for over 10 years.

CSS

CSS is one of the core languages of the web. It defines the style of websites and web applications by changing the appearance of HTML elements in a browser. I use CSS and its superset language Sass daily when I am designing the user interface for my web application projects.

Differential Equations

At UMBC I took three courses dedicated to differential equations - Ordinary Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations, and Linear Dynamic Systems. This area of mathematics is the most important in the natural sciences, and therefore I find it very fascinating and rewarding to teach.

JavaScript

As a web application developer, I am very familiar with JavaScript and the frameworks and libraries built with JavaScript. I am also well versed in TypeScript and Coffee Script, languages that transpile into JavaScript.

Linear Algebra

I have completed three courses dedicated to Advanced Linear Algebra at UMBC. As an undergraduate, I did two years of research in computational biology that relied heavily on matrix equations and efficient linear algebra methods. I believe that Linear Algebra is the most useful mathematics to apply to real world situations, and I am very enthusiastic about sharing my knowledge on the subject.

Precalculus

Before I graduated high school, I had completed Calculus I, II, and Multi-Variable Calculus. During college, every course I took towards my Math degree relied on calculus. Combine this with my tutoring experience, I have been involved with teaching and learning
Calculus for over 10 years.

Probability

Probability and Statistics courses were among my favorite at UMBC, and I immensely enjoy teaching these subjects to others. Among all of the subjects I have taught and learned, I find these to be the most practical in everyday life. I especially have had great success in helping college students be successful in these challenging subjects.

Python

I am a full stack developer for mobile and web applications. Python is the language used for Django, a web application framework used in many of my projects' APIs. Python also comes with many packages built for scientific programming and machine learning, which I have used in research projects.

R

R is a powerful language for handling large multi-dimensional data sets and has the advantage of being open source. As a student of Statistics, R was my tool of choice when I needed to make statistical inferences on large data sets.

Web Design

As a web application developer, it is important for me to create visually appealing and non obtrusive interfaces that display through a web browser. I can help teach you the tools available to make the process of designing a website or applications simple, and the current design conventions for mobile and desktop interfaces,
