About Chris

I have decades of experience teaching undergraduate and adult learners that feel they are lost with mathematics or statistics. I thoroughly enjoy teaching individuals that have some fear of the subjects, because once they understand that I also experienced this fear, then they realize they are not alone with this anxiety. My job is to make you feel comfortable with the mathematics and statistics. You will be a better student once you understand the basics.

I always struggled with mathematics and statistics to the point where I felt that my talents were more toward the social sciences. It was not until I finished college that I realized that I did understand mathematics, but maybe my ability to learn them just needed a push. I tutored mathematics in the mid-1990s and started to teach mathematics at a local university starting in the late 1990s and continued to teach math and statistics to undergraduates at that local university until approximately 2006. While I was teaching college undergraduate students, I also taught middle school and high school mathematics at a parochial high school, where I learned more about the mind-set of younger students. I then started to tutor math to high school and middle school students who needed additional help understanding the mathematics that they would undoubtedly use in the future. I felt good when the students understood the material!

In all, with the decades of teaching undergraduate and adult students mathematics, logic, and statistics, I feel very good sharing my knowledge of the subject and helping others to understand what I was originally afraid to learn. I have a graduate certificate in Applied Statistics, as well as over 20 graduate semester hours in statistics.

I like to tutor individuals in a quiet public place because it is this environment where the student and the tutor can feel comfortable. I also will bring a laptop with me to ensure the student can understand the technology part of the tutoring, and if the student has their technology, that would be a great way for them to feel comfortable using that technology for calculating math and statistics.

As far as using technology to teach mathematics, logic, public speaking, or any of the other subjects that are my specialty, I also have decades of experience with applications like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. I can help the student use these technology tools to assist their learning the mathematics and statistical subjects, as well as showing them basic and advanced methods to calculate the statistical theory into reality.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have experience teaching college algebra and algebra 2 to adult students as well as middle and high school students. I especially enjoy teaching mathematics to adult students because of their motivation and enthusiasm in applying the mathematical theories to real life. After teaching adults for years in an undergraduate environment, I found that descriptions and explanations using the adult's environment (work, hobby) helps immensely in the instruction.

Algebra 2

I have tutored and taught Algebra 2 to middle and high school students as well as part of a college curriculum. Math is not a difficult subject if taken in chunks of information, and I have learned that Algebra 2 is one of those subjects.

General Music

Besides a music course in college, I completed four years of choral music in high school, and over 10 years of guitar lessons, with 3 years being in classical guitar from an instructor from Carnegie-Mellon University. I understand general music and especially like translating sheet music to guitar TABs, which is something I wish I could share with others.

Guitar

I have been taking guitar and playing guitar periodically for over 40 years. I understand the music background (actually written music for the guitar in tab from piano music). I also took several years of classical guitar at Carnegie-Mellon University from a professional classical guitar player who was a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony.

Logic

I taught LOGIC at the undergraduate level at Strayer University in Baltimore MD periodically for several years during the early 2000s. I taught the process of arguments and symbolic logic as part of the curriculum. My student evaluations of this subject averaged approximately 4.2 out of 5.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Excel since the late 1990s and still use it daily in my current position. I can share how to use it for statistical purposes, as well as a quick database. I can also share some advanced techniques such as conditional formulas.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have several decades of experience with PowerPoint, including presentations in academia, military, and private industry. I use PowerPoint daily in my current position and understand how to add narrative and video to the presentations.

Project Management

I currently have a current Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) as well as as the PMI- Agile Certification (PMI-ACP) from PMI. I have also been a project management either in the military, academia, private industry, and public service, for almost 40 years. I have taught project management at the undergraduate level for Strayer University.

Public Speaking

I have been a public speaker since 1977, speaking in front of VIPs at international conferences (such as the Computer Measurement Group conferences of 2006-2011), and have presented in various venues including military and academia. I have taught public speaking to various groups including undergraduate students at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. I use an individual's weakness as strength and they gain self confidence and self assurance in the process.

R

I have used "R" while taking graduate statistics courses with Penn State University in applied statistics. I used "R" for time series studies, along with combining "R" with other applications like Excel in order to move and analyze data. I currently use "R" with "RStudio" to establish probability studies like the Monte Carlo and Monty Hall simulations.

Statistics

I have a graduate certificate in Applied Statistics from Penn State University as well as over 5 years experience teaching undergraduate statistics to adult students at Strayer University. In addition to that, I have a faculty certification with a nationally recognized Department of Defense school.

I consistently rated high feedback marks with students in my statistics course.
