About Ben

Hello all prospective students, parents, and friends.

I want to tell you a little bit about my background. I am newer to WyzAnt (about a year), but I am not new to tutoring students. Currently, I am a teacher and a coach at a private independent school. I am looking forward to tutoring students part time. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Management, and earned a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University. Go RAMS! My undergraduate degree served as a platform for several tutoring and outreach opportunities. I served as a part time tutor at the Huntington Learning Center working with middle and high school students in reading, writing, mathematics, and SAT Prep. I also worked in the Success For Schools program with University Instructors, working with Inner-City elementary school students tutoring mathematics. After completing graduate school, I immediately started teaching. I have been teaching for the past eight years in several capacities and I love everyday of it. My love for teaching comes from my love of learning.

I specialize in teaching mathematics, English, reading, and writing to elementary and middle school students. I have also tutored high school students on SAT preparation. I am passionate about working in a learning environment, where I am learning from others, and most importantly meeting the student "where they are" so that he/she can approach his/her coursework with passion, conviction, and persistence. It is my goal to instill both confidence and understanding in the student.

I am dedicated to establishing an environment that is stimulating, comforting, and appropriate to a student's ability. I am also committed to an open, honest, and tempered approach to help the student push past the threshold of uncertainty to confidence, while experiencing the reward and value of adversity.

Having a complete understanding of the course/test, your expectations, and your most comfortable way of learning will assist me in helping you reach your potential. This helps me assess what areas need more improvement, respective to the time available to you. I hope I can be of help to you.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your endeavors.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have been coaching basketball in different capacities for the past 11 years. I am currently a Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at an independent school. I have one regional and state coach of the year awards and have assisted in coaching several current college players.
