About Sara

Hello there! My name is Sara and I have been a teacher for five years. I have worked with both elementary and middle school students with special needs. These special needs include both academic and behavioral disabilities. I am currently teaching eighth grade at a nonpublic special education school specializing in assisting students with autism and/or emotional disabilities. I have also taught fourth (three years) and fifth grade (one year).

I have a passion for helping students learn and grow. As an educator, it is a pleasure to work one-on-one with students to closely monitor their progress. I take an active investment in the students I teach and work hard to get to know and understand them so I am able to plan lessons that use their strengths and interests to address their needs.

Despite working everyday, I am very flexible in terms of late afternoons/evenings and weekends! While most of my background is with students with special needs, I am willing to teach any elementary or middle school student. I am mainly looking to do reading instruction but I can also tutor in math, social studies, science, study skills or homework help! Because of my special education background, I am familiar with teaching all subjects as I do so everyday.

As a side note: Right now, I am only interested in doing tutoring at a local library or public area of your choice. I enjoy teaching very much and hope that I will be able to help as many young learners as possible through WyzAnt. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am currently working with students with high behavior needs. It is in a nonpublic special education school. ADHD is very prevalent in the students I have worked with, and I have worked on strategies to help improve their focus and success in school.

Common Core

I have been working with common core curriculum for the past three years. I have received training on common core math strategies for the past two summers as well as the ELA standards. I have a lot of experience aligning curriculum and activities to the common core and helping students meet the high-demands that the common core curriculum requires.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have an MSDE certification in Elementary Education - k-6.

Phonics

I have worked with elementary-level students on phonics skills using elements of the Wilson reading program. I am a certified Reading Specialist. I have worked with students 1:1 and in a whole classroom setting on phonics skills.

Social Studies

I am currently teaching eighth grade Social Studies. I have taught fourth and fifth grade social studies as well. I have taught the history of Maryland as well as government concepts and the history of America from the early explorations to the Reconstruction era.

Special Needs

I have a MSDE certification in Special Education, infant to 8th grade.
