About Mark

I am a historian and writer living in Olney, Maryland, the author of nine books and nearly 200 articles and essays exploring a range of historical, social and cultural topics, from 18th century slave quarters to 19th century inventors and inventions to 20th century financial regulations.

I’ve taught history at the College of Southern Maryland on the main campus at La Plata, serving as an adjunct professor of History of Western Civilization (I hold a B.A. in History and an M.A. in American Studies). Moreover, I’ve been a guest lecturer in history at a variety of national and international conferences, from speaking on the history of masonry architecture before the International Bricklayers Union to lecturing on the history of U.S. currency for the National Society of Colonial Dames of America.

I have years of service as a historian for federal, state and local agencies. As historian for the U.S. Department of Treasury, I headed the historical research and publications programs for the U.S. Customs Service, and oversaw the nationwide historic Treasury building preservation and interpretation program. As a historian and writer/editor for the Maryland Historical Trust, I headed the state historic preservation office’s publications program, working with historians and archaeologists in the production of books, monographs, newsletters, brochures and other materials. As a historian for the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, I served as staff historian for the Department of Parks and the Montgomery County Planning Board and County Council, preparing detailed historic structures reports and designing museum installations and interpretive programs.

I’ve published widely on historical topics, not only in books – including such works as Fortress of Finance; The United States Treasury Building, Historic Photos of Baltimore, At the Head of the Bay and Devil’s Pact: Inside the World of the Teamsters – but in nearly 200 popular articles and scholarly essays appearing in a variety of national publications.

I’m a former columnist with Washingtonian Magazine, having authored the “Washington First” column detailing historic first occurrences in the DC area, and with the Chronicle of Higher Education, writing the “Gateway Information Technology Forum,” exploring innovative uses of IT in higher education. Currently, I’m a contributing writer with Bethesda Magazine, penning the “Once Upon a Time” feature on historic people, places and events.
