Welcome to my tutoring profile!
I am a teacher, a tutor, a mom, and a lifelong learner. I have over 8 years of classroom experience, a current Maryland teaching certificate (Grades K-6) and a Master's degree in Elementary Education. I currently work as a tutor for a local tutoring company as well as tutor my own private clients. I specialize in helping children who have ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and other learning disabilities. I am the proud mom of an 8 year old daughter and a 15 year old son, who just happens to be on the autism spectrum.
I realize that parents seek tutoring for a myriad of different reasons. Some find tutors to provide the individualized attention that can elude many students in today's large classrooms. When I tutor your child, I am able to give him or her my undivided attention and a customized lesson. Other parents seek tutors for ongoing homework help. They may want a tutor to focus specifically on one subject area such as reading comprehension or math.
At this time of year, many families are looking for me to assist with summer homework assignments. Summertime also raises the issue of maintaining the skills students have acquired throughout the school year. Even in the absence of official "summer homework", I can provide interesting lessons and materials to help your child maintain the skills he or she will need in the fall.
Occasionally parents seek tutoring to provide children with enrichment projects based on an area of particular interest (ie.. a child who is fascinated with math and performs well beyond his grade level, or a student who is a talented writer and wants to publish her work online).
I'm a firm believer that parents know their children best. I encourage parents to share their concerns, suggestions, and questions with me at all times. I like to use my initial meeting with a student and family as an opportunity to become acquainted with the child, learn about his/her interests, and conduct an informal skills assessment. Whenever possible, I try to integrate the child's interests or hobbies into our lessons. The skills assessment provides me with a baseline of the student's performance level and an indication of which areas need (re)teaching.
At the conclusion of the first session, I provide parents with suggestions for how we might proceed with our time together. If the student will need to bring any specific supplies (i.e. Summer homework packet, notebook paper, highlighter, etc), I will let you know at that time. I hope this gives you a window into my tutoring philosophy and process. I look forward to working with you and your child.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a current Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate in the state of Maryland. I have over 7 years of classroom experience as well as a Master's degree in Elementary Education.

I have a total of 12 credits beyond my Master's degree, all of which fall under Reading and Writing. In other words, I have completed a significant portion of the coursework towards becoming a Reading Specialist. In addition to my teaching experience in both elementary and older (4-5 yr) preschool classrooms, this makes me highly qualified to teach phonics.

I am a certified teacher with a master's degree in education. I've worked with many special needs students throughout my teaching career. I understand the kinds of accommodations that can be made to insure all students succeed. Accommodations include presenting material in different formats, offering multiple ways for students to demonstrate their understanding/what they've learned, providing extra time to complete an assignment or test, providing handwritten or typed notes, providing a scribe, allowing extra breaks, and shortening assignments. These are just a handful of ways teachers can help to make the experience of learning a more positive one for students with special needs.
I am currently tutoring four students with high functioning autism. One is a rising fourth grader and we have been working together since the beginning of his third grade year. He also has ADHD which adds another layer of challenges to both schoolwork and homework. We have been working on math, reading, and handwriting. His teacher has given me permission to shorten homework assignments as necessary so that he can still demonstrate understanding and mastery without becoming overwhelmed and losing focus. Often I will break math problems into small bite size chunks that are more manageable than attempting the whole problem at once.
One of my other students on the spectrum is struggling with reading comprehension and writing. She is a rising seventh grader who reads at a second-third grade level. We have experimented with a number of different graphic organizers that have helped her to focus on the main ideas and details in a story. Writing is a tedious process for her so I sometimes have her dictate her thoughts. She's very computer savvy so we've also started a keyboarding program.
The majority of my graduate work in elementary education was focused on reading and writing (literacy) instruction.
