About Laurie

I love teaching piano. I have studied piano for over 17 years. I teach group piano at the Senior Center of Rockville for a music school, and I have taught piano privately and in groups to all ages of students from 6 to 90.

My goal is to have fun with music and to find melodies that mean something to you as you play. I provide the first book for free.

I am also a certified ESOL teacher in Maryland, and I love teaching English. I have tutored hundreds of hours of ESOL and have my State ESOL certificate as well as a TESOL certificate from Montgomery College. I am a semi-retired lawyer as well.

I teach piano only in my home near Roots Market in Olney, and I will teach ESOL in my home or at the Rockville library.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have passed the elementary math test, prealgebra, reading, writing and vocabulary tests. I have raised three children and have great patience with children. I taught young children piano when I was younger. I was a certified French teacher in Secondary Education, but I am planning on teaching ESOL to both young and older students in the next school year. I have passed my Praxis II in ESOL, and I am certified to teach ESOL in the State of Maryland.

ESL/ESOL

I am a certified ESOL teacher in the State of Maryland. I am a native English speaker. I received my TESOL Training Certificate in December from Montgomery College after 16 credits. I am currently teaching ESOL two nights a week and tutoring as well.

I have recently retired from a long career in law and human resources.

Piano

I studied piano (including classical) from the time I was 6 until 17. I continued to play through the years.

I then took piano lessons at the School of Music in Rockville for 8 more years. I have taught group piano in elementary schools, and I am currently teaching group piano at the Senior Center of Rockville for a music school.

I love sharing my love of all kinds of music with my students. My students range in age from 5 to 70.

Vocabulary

Due to my educational background and my language background, I have a very large vocabulary and know word usage.

Writing

I am a semi-retired lawyer and HR professional. I love to write, and I hope to communicate this love to my students. I am extremely patient.

I am a certified ESOL teacher in the State of Maryland, and I completed my TESOL certificate in December of 2013.

Professional and patient

Her tutoring for a foreign student on ESL/ESOL were well organized, and is helping my children fit into the class. Also went out of her way to help us arrange a perfect location for the tutoring. Well worth the fees! I am sticking with her for a while.
