Welcome! My name is Sarah, and I teach piano, English, grammar, reading, and writing. I can also help with preparation for the SAT/ACT reading and writing sections. In May 2017, I graduated cum laude from the University of Maryland in College Park with a B.M. in Piano Performance and a B.A. in Vocal Performance. I am a CAPA scholarship recipient and a member of Pi Kappa Lambda.

Since the age of 8, I have been an active performer and competitor in the Washington Metropolitan Area. At the age of 15, I débuted with both the Capital City Symphony and the JMU Symphony Orchestra. I have won numerous awards and competitions in VA, MD, and D.C and have performed at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. I have maintained a private piano studio since 2014 and also teach additional musical skills such as music theory, music history, improvisation, and sightreading. I am excited about introducing children to the beauty of music and believe that learning an instrument positively affects individuals in all areas of life. Listening to, practicing, and performing music equips children with important skills that will stay with them for a lifetime.

During my five years at UMD I received a rich liberal arts education and took many classes outside of the realm of music, including professional writing, nuclear physics, quantum mechanics, oral communications, and even Flamenco dance! The only thing I love more than learning is teaching--and I teach children of all ages and am comfortable with teaching children with special needs. I have an extensive background in English literature, reading, and writing--I received a 5 on the English Literature and Composition AP exam and I have even written my own novel, which I hope to publish soon!

If you would like your child to acquire essential life skills as well as the enjoyment and pride of being able to play the piano, please contact me and set up a lesson! Lessons are a half-hour in duration, although older and more advanced students may be given hour lessons. I do not travel to students’ houses to teach piano, as my studio is located at my home where I have access to my own library of music and a grand piano. For tutoring in English/grammar/reading/writing, music theory, history, or composition, however, I teach for a full hour and am happy to meet at a public location.

Music History

I have had 18 years of instruction in all areas of music (music history, music theory, ethnomusicology, improvisation, composition, and sightreading) culminating in two bachelors degrees in two different instruments. During my five years of undergrad, I completed two years of music history with highly respected professors. These courses covered the entire history of Western music from the ancient Greek music of the first century AD to the music of contemporary composers such as Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt. I have also studied the music of non-Western societies, such as the music of West Africa, Central Java, and Brazil.
