I will definitely recommend Mrs. J to anyone interested in learning Korean. She has ample materials and and is always prepared to meet my needs. She is also very accessible via Skype and email. She is a great teacher who is genuinely invested in the success of her students.
Cathryn was very patient with me as she reviewed the basics. I liked that she was able to quickly identify my strengths/weaknesses and tailored the lesson accordingly. She has helped me feel confident in moving forward with my studies!
My daughter is enjoying her lessons. Her tutor is very patient and makes sure that she understands before moving on to next lesson.
Cathryn has been an excellent instructor. She has customized lessons perfectly to fit my needs. She has always been easy to reach when needed, and she has been both patient and encouraging as we work towards my goals. Looking back at past lessons, I feel like I've made such progress it's hard to believe I've really only been working with Cathryn for a month.
I have been studying with Cathryn for almost a year now, and she is both a fantastic tutor and a great friend. I really look forward to our sessions each week.
She is extremely reasonably priced, and her sessions usually run a little over an hour (about 15 minutes or so), so I definitely feel like I'm getting my money's worth. She is always on time for each meeting, and she is very easy to reach via email/text/Kakao. She is flexible with meeting times, and I have never had a problem rescheduling and/or canceling if something comes up (granted, I always try to give her at least 24 hours notice when this happens, so I cannot comment on how she handles last-minute cancellations). She is also flexible with meeting locations, and she has even offered to have Skype sessions when one of us is scheduled to be out of town.
We study from Korean textbooks (written completely in Hangul), grammar/vocabulary worksheets (combination of English and Hangul), and Korean audio clips; she provides her students with their own personal copies of the materials. A typical lesson for me is as follows: read out loud from the textbook and then translate for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, study grammar concepts and new vocabulary from the worksheets for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, and wrap up with a conversation in Korean using the topics we just covered for approximately 10 to 20 minutes. This is the style that works for me, but since it may not work for everyone, Cathryn is willing to tailor her lessons to the student's preferences.
In terms of personality, Cathryn is very friendly and easy to talk to. She doesn't make me feel embarrassed when I ask questions or mess up the pronunciation of a word. She can be a little blunt at times, but her "tell it as it is" attitude has taught me things about my own learning style that I would not have otherwise known. It is obvious that she does private tutoring because she enjoys teaching and building relationships with her students. All in all, I highly recommend Cathryn as a tutor for anyone who is serious about learning to speak Korean.
I have worked with Cathryn several months now. She is very nice and focuses on the big picture and end goals. She provides adequate motivation for those who may find it difficult to learn new languages.
She has also been very responsive and available to my busy and hectic work schedule. She has a set algorithm and specific lessons for teaching, but is also receptive to any words or topics you want to focus on.
I highly recommend her for anyone who is serious and motivated about learning Korean language. I will continue to work with her as long as I reasonably can.
I searched for a Korean language tutor for my two children for years. A family member recommended WyzAnt and I was lucky enough to see Cathryn's post. From the first lesson my children enjoyed their time with Ms. Cat. She integrates learning with fun in a way that definitely reinforces the lessons. She is a true teacher using multiple resources to help my son get the maximum benefit out of every class. My son has learned so much! I highly recommend Ms. Cathryn’s services!
Cathryn is warm, patient, funny, and a very good teacher of Korean. I highly recommend her and look forward to studying again with her soon!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
