About Nancy

Bio

My favorite thing about tutoring math is when I hear a student excitedly announce that he or she "gets it" now. The announcement usually is made with a mixture of joy, pride and relief. That's what math tutoring is all about -- helping students get to the place where problems that seemed impossible to solve now seem easy.

My favorite thing about tutoring math is when I hear a student excitedly announce that he or she "gets it" now. The announcement usually is made with a mixture of joy, pride and relief. That's what math tutoring is all about -- helping students get to the place where problems that seemed impossible to solve now seem easy.

I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, and then I earned my Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Iowa State University. I worked for many years as a research scientist before taking early retirement so I could focus on what I love -- helping young people who may be temporarily struggling with math or science. I've been tutoring either full-time or part-time for over ten years. My students have ranged from 4th grade to college level. Currently, my students range in age from 10 to 19.

Three years ago I retired from teaching at a local Catholic High School, where I taught Algebra I and Conceptual Physics. Classroom teaching has its own challenges, but I most enjoy the one-on-one interaction that comes with tutoring. I love getting the calls and e-mails from students and parents, proudly announcing that "A" on the test or report card. I particularly love hearing the joyful outbursts when a student suddenly understands a concept he or she previously found to be difficult. "Oh! That's how you do it -- that's easy!"

When I have a new student, the first thing I do is sit down with the student and have him or her tell me what he or she likes about math, doesn't like, what types of things are easy and what things are difficult. We talk about what's going on in math class now, and do a few examples together so I can see firsthand where the student is confident, where the strengths are, and where review and practice would be beneficial. Since a portion of the first session is spent getting to know one another and laying the groundwork for a beneficial student/tutor relationship, I offer a 25% discount for the first session. [Please note this discount does not apply to lessons booked through the online "Instant Book" system.]

You may be wondering why I tutor math when most of my experience is in science. I have found that for many students, math is a stumbling block that gets in the way of enjoying science class. Math is the language of science, and if the math is causing difficulty it can lead to a distaste for science as well. So I focus my tutoring on pre-algebra, algebra and geometry, and the key word there is "focus." Unlike some tutors who offer to help with eight, ten or 16 different subjects, I only tutor pre-algebra, algebra I and geometry. If students don't get a solid foundation with these topics, and don't master the concepts, future math and science classes and college entrance exams may pose a challenge.

My students tell me I'm a great math tutor because I explain concepts differently than their teacher explained them. I'm always amazed at the number of times my students exclaim, "Oh, I get it now! Why didn't my teacher explain it that way?!" Whether it's fractions, percents, decimals, inequalities, absolute value, exponents, polynomials, factoring, parallel lines or geometric proofs, I'm confident together we can come up with a way to explain it so it makes sense.

Too many students don't live up to their potential in math or science, which is a shame when all they might need is a little extra help or someone to explain things a little differently. If you or your child needs help with math, please consider contacting me to discuss the possibilities. As mentioned above, in order to be sure that tutoring can help you or your child, the first lesson is discounted by 25%. This provides the opportunity for the student and me to get to know each other and to explore the student's learning style, as well as to discuss the areas in which the student is having difficulty.

Although my Ph.D. is in analytical chemistry, and a large portion of my career was spent working as a research scientist, my tutoring expertise is in Algebra I, pre-algebra, and geometry. I have taught algebra at the high school level, and my students have ranged in age from 11 to 16.

Although my Ph.D. is in analytical chemistry, and a large portion of my career was spent working as a research scientist, my tutoring expertise is in Geometry, Algebra I, and pre-algebra. I've been tutoring Geometry for four years outside of Wyzant, and just recently added it to my Wyzant profile because of student requests.

Very Helpful

She was able to explain the concepts I am learning in a clear and concise manner. This is something my professor was unable to do. I am very pleased with her services.

Beyond Happy!

Nancy is providing my daughters with a crash course to help them get through a placement exam. She connects with them, identifies their weak points, and provides great structure to fill in their gaps. They both have told me how beneficial her assistance is to them. I couldn't be happier (or more grateful!). Thank you!

Very knowledgeable and patient tutor

Nancy has helped my daughter tremendously with her pre-algebra skills and knowledge. My daughter was struggling and lacked confidence in her pre-algebra class but after just a few meetings with Nancy, she is now getting straight A's and is very confident about the material. They reviewed work done at the beginning of the year that my daughter had not understood and with Nancy's help she is now able to solve them easily. I highly recommend Nancy as a tutor. She is patient and calm and explains the math in a way that may not be taught in the classroom. My daughter says Nancy is one of her favorite teachers.
