About Karen

As an educator and tutor, I am much more than a highly-qualified, state-certified classroom teacher with 10+ years public school experience. I also offer the enthusiastic, creative personality of a life-long learner and self-employed artist. With my varied life experiences and educational repertoire, I know kids and what they need to experience being the best that they can be.

In addition to being a classroom teacher who has taught 100's of students to read at one of the top rated elementary schools in Montgomery County, my adventures as a home school co-op teacher (prior to teaching with MCPS) provide me with a special savvy at coordinating the educational needs of multiple age levels and abilities while using new formats/technology to foster creativity and engagement. I also bring the experience of many years of volunteer work involving public speaking, teaching of all age groups from infant to elderly, and event planning for local non-profits. I have a deep understanding of the common core standards as well as the ability to differentiate instruction for all students.

My goal is to create a love of learning and discovery that will carry students on a life-long learning adventure. Tutoring provides the incremental success that students need to have that "I can do this!" feeling that is so important to future successes. The following statement sums up where I am coming from both inside and outside the classroom: "My mission, as a life-long learner and teacher, is to develop a learning community where intellectual risk-taking, effort, and discovery are all highly valued and expected. I will make personal connections with students to motivate them to assimilate this culture into a personal and persistent belief system that can last a lifetime."

I have 10 years experience teaching math to elementary students, two as a Math Specialist and 8 as a classroom teacher. I have the ability to bring students along by molding curriculum to student needs and by using varied presentations to help students with multiple learning styles. My students use hands on techniques and technology to provide the best math foundation possible. I am not a typical math teacher who talks down to students who don't understand math. I strive to make the subject interesting, understandable, and not overwhelming! In addition to continuing professional development through my school system, I also have graduate level coursework completed for teaching math to elementary students.

As an educator and an avid reader, I have a passion for giving children the gift of being able to accurately and articulately express their ideas. Being a good writer is a powerful success tool and I understand the progression of developing the traits of a writer through discourse, consumption, critique, and reproduction of good writing. I have more than 10 years experience teaching children to effectively use the conventions of language and to recognize and use narrative, opinion, and informational writing.

Positive connections with kids and parents is my business. I believe learning is nurtured through a child's sense that you care about them being a success, which I do. Through both my classroom and volunteer experiences, I have a proven track record of positive relationships, kids and parents who feel great about what they are learning, and top-notch achievement data for my students.

My degree in Early Childhood education, coupled with 12 additional semester hours of college level courses in reading instruction, plus an additional 12 hours of graduate level courses in best practices in teaching and curriculum development all give me a solid foundation for my reading instruction. During my more than 10 years teaching, I have demonstrated the ability to identify the learning needs of non-readers and beginning readers in order to give the the precise phonics instruction necessary to provide them the essential building blocks of becoming a reader.

If you are looking for a master teacher who is also an empathetic partner either to help fill in gaps in your child's education or to provide opportunities for enrichment, please contact me to learn more and to set up your first session.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have references available from art students. I have taught one- on-one art lessons, as well art classes for homeschool co-op groups in grades K-5, using curriculum developed from the text _Drawing in the Classroom_ by Roger Klukes. My skills include painting, elements of art, and drawing including portraits, nature, and still-life. I have a passion for integrating art across the curriculum in my job with MCPS as a classroom teacher (my latest professional development course being "Integrating Art History" through Art of Ed, transcript available). I also own and operate my own art business in which I do live event paintings, portraits, and commissions.

Phonics

I have Highly Qualified status as a certified early childhood teacher. My resume includes having taught 1st grade students to read at a top rated school in Montgomery County elementary school for the last 8 years.
