Towson University (Math, Computer Scien)
John's Hopkins University (Graduate Coursework)
I have a BS degree in both Mathematics and Computer Science from Towson University and have completed some graduate work in Computer Science at John's Hopkins University. I have completed a successful 25 year long software engineering career, specializing primarily in satellite communications.
I believe in using word problems to teach math concepts. I think many times students forget what problem they are solving and get bogged down with memorizing the mathematical steps. When this happens they are not able to use their analytical skills to solve the problem and they don't know whether the answer they came up with actually makes sense. I like to use creative teaching techniques such as using acronyms, color codes, stories, songs or just silly names for things. It’s important for students to know that the concepts we learn in math are actually used in the real world.
I’ve gained my math tutoring experience through tutoring my son through middle school, high school and college math. I have experience tutoring pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, SAT math prep and College Fundamentals of Math through Wyzant. I have chosen to be a Math tutor because I love to work with teenagers and young adults and see that light bulb come on when they understand a new concept and the feeling of confidence that comes along with it. I feel like it is a way to give back to my community.
I currently offer tutoring in all levels of Algebra, SAT math prep and the lower level college math courses. My schedule is very flexible, as math tutoring is my only job. My schedule works especially well for home school, high school seniors and college students because I am available during the day.
It would be my pleasure to help your child succeed in math and realize its importance. My daughter commented to me that everything is now easier to understand! She's so professional and kind! She is also very organized and always arrives to meetings early.
Debra is a caring and knowledgeable tutor. She wants her student to succeed. Did not rush through the work. Made sure my daughter understood the work before moving on. Also made it clear that she is available anytime if my daughter needs help with homework through the week.
Debra slowly explained the math/algebra problems slowing to help me grasp how to solve equations with substitution. I will definitely call upon her help again.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
