Hello! My name is Dana E., I am a tutor in Middletown, MD. I recently graduated from college with a double degree in conservation and conflict analysis and resolution, and am currently working as an interpretive ranger and education coordinator for the National Park Service. My favorite part of my job is showing kids the landscape and history of the park, because it provides an opportunity for meaningful engagement and hands-on learning. In the past, I have also had classroom-based tutoring experience. I have 4 years of experience tutoring children ranging from elementary to middle school in reading, writing, and science. I recently moved to the area, and I am interested in pursuing local tutoring opportunities.

I take pride in my passion for learning. I strive to learn something new everyday, especially something different to challenge my comfort zone. I have always loved learning, but I struggled in school when I was young. That is the root of why I love tutoring and working with kids who may need some extra help- because I can empathize with the frustration that comes with 'why am I not getting it?' Seeing the connection and excitement as they do 'get it,' and watch them build confidence with their own abilities over the course of working together, is the most rewarding feeling.

My goal is that my students feel empowered by their own intelligence and abilities; having trouble with academics does not define a person's future or their abilities. I am also conscious of the fact every child learns differently, and the best results come from getting to know the student and their individual needs. I take pride in my role of guiding a child through difficult subject areas and academic challenges to help them recognize their own abilities and strengths.

I have completed several ecology courses, and one of my college degrees is environmental conservation. I can identify most local plant and animal species and understand their role in the ecosystem from a macro perspective. I applied this knowledge and my passion for environmental science to working at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute working on wildlife population monitoring. In my current job, working with environmental education for the Park Service, I take my formal science background and teach environmental science principles to kids of all ages. I am an effective science tutor because I have a detailed background in the subject as well as the ability to condense subject matter and make it relevant to children.

English is the subject I have taught most frequently, and it is a critically important in our day-to-day communication. I have strong reading, writing, and proofreading skills that I can apply to a teaching setting. I have also tutored six children in an ESL setting, which allows me to approach teaching languages from multiple angles. I enjoy how rewarding studying English can be; being able to record one's thoughts in writing and communicate an idea is very powerful, on whatever ability level. I can use my English abilities and tutoring experience to help others achieve that feeling. My goal for tutoring English is helping a child with an immediate academic goal, but also building long term confidence in their ability to convey ideas through writing or speech. English and writing are creative subjects that evoke creative teaching styles, and I want to work with individual students to discover the best route for their needs.

Having recently graduated college, I have a valuable perspective that I can share with prospective college students. I have a current understanding of college requirements, expectations, and job markets for graduates. I also understand the importance of strategy for college courses and planning for future jobs. I did not have access to someone with this experience or any information when I planned for college, and it would have been a valuable resource. Despite these circumstances, I graduated from college early with a double major, study abroad experience, and multiple internships. I can take my experiences and lessons from navigating higher education to help guide prospective college students around potential difficulties and barriers. I have a passion for learning, and I want others to be able to share that experience!

I look forward to meeting you! If you are interested in English, science, higher education, or any other subject please contact me. I have a wide variety of subject areas I am able to tutor, and am interested in hearing how I can help! Thank you very much!
