I have worked as a Kindergarten teacher for 3 years. The curriculum included teaching alphabet recognition and writing, numbers 1-20 recognition and writing, phonics and reading simple books. When my children reached school age I was very active in helping them with their schoolwork as well as helping in the classroom. I worked with their teachers in creating classroom teaching aids, correcting papers, and working with small groups of students who needed extra reinforcement in reading, phonics, and math. I began tutoring again when my grandsons needed extra help with reading, phonics, and math. I worked with the teachers at Dynard Elementary School in St. Mary's county who provided me with lots of help and resources. I am proud to say my grandsons are now reading well above grade level. I also work as a substitute teacher in the lower elementary grades at Grace Christian Academy.

I really enjoy working one-on-one with students. We work as a team to build on their strengths and overcome their weaknesses. I believe learning should be fun and interesting. I try to make each lesson something the student will look forward to instead of dread. I use flashcards, worksheets, games and interesting books to capture and keep my students' interest. I start with the simple basics to instill confidence and then introduce harder material to keep them moving forward. I ask my students to always try their best and use simple rewards to encourage their efforts.

Phonics,

Phonics

I teach the ABeka phonics charts to kindergarten and first and second grade students. I teach the sounds of the letters of the alphabet as well as blends, digraphs, and diphthongs using workbooks, games, and flash cards. The student and I work as a team to overcome the difficulties and reach new goals. I use a simple reward system as encouragement and it has worked well.
Reading,

Reading

I use the phonetic approach to reading. We learn the sounds of the alphabet as well as blends, diphthongs, and digraphs. I also teach the most common sight words as well as word families. I use phonics drills to help the students identify and read the different sounds quickly and accurately. I teach reading fluency to help the students learn to read smoothly from punctuation to punctuation at an acceptable rate of speed. I teach reading comprehension since it is very important for the students to understand and remember what they read. Whenever possible, I use fun games to reinforce the words we are learning.
Spelling,

Spelling

I use a combination of worksheets and drills for Spelling. I have students write the words a specific number of times and also give the students fun worksheets to help them retain the words. I also do drills and give practice tests.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Over the years I have found that students who have a wide vocabulary do better in almost every other subject. I give age appropriate words for the students to learn and incorporate into their daily lives. When reading, if a student comes across a word they are not familiar with, we look it up and talk about it so the student has a better understanding of what they are reading. I also periodically test the students to see how much they are retaining.

Writing

Writing

I teach the students first of all to begin writing about something they are very familiar with. Then we move on to unfamiliar subjects. We write a topic sentence that gives an overview of what they are writing about. Then we develop that sentence by giving at least three reasons, facts, etc. that support the topic sentence. I encourage my students to try to always give examples of the reasons or facts they are using. Then we wrap it all up with a strong conclusion that reiterates what we've said in the article. We proofread for grammatical errors and make changes as necessary, We also learn about the different kinds of writing like informational, persuasive, personal narratives, and expository. We learn figurative language and how to use it in writing.
