I have had the opportunity and privilege of attending a French Immersion School in Montgomery County, MD, during my elementary school years. I continued my French Immersion learning experience in junior high and high school. During my junior year of high school, I spent the year in Aiseau-Presles, Belgium, as an exchange student. While there, I not only expanded my level of French, but also enhanced my knowledge of the French culture. Upon my return as a senior, I took the AP exam, and passed with a score of 4. I also took one year of Spanish as well. Because of the proficient level of French I was able to achieve throughout the years, I won the Washington, DC, city wide contest for oral proficiency.

I decided to take a break in my educational training to get married, and raise a family. I am a recent graduate of St. Mary's College of Maryland. I majored in International Languages and Cultures with an emphasis in French. I have also taken additional coursework in education studies, including learning exceptionalities. In addition to my coursework I have passed my Praxis I (General content knowledge) and Praxis II ( French) exams, which demonstrate my level of knowledge.

In regards to my style of teaching, I use the visual, oral, and written approach. I believe one is just as important as the other to truly acquire the learning of the language. I also ask that the child take the opportunity to watch films in French (having the spoken language changed to French as oppose to subtitles), that way they get to hear the natural flow of the spoken language, and the teach via context in which the words are used. Because I believe in staying technologically up to date, I also offer lessons via Skype.

I look forward to being able to help your child succeed in the language, and hope that they will gain more than just the ability to speak it in class, but apply it one day when they venture outside the states.

French,

French

French is a foreign language that is spoken in 30 countries around the world. Because of my extensive study in French, I am fluent in the language, and have an authentic Parisian accent. I believe the best way to learn is to include immersion as a part of lesson. I cover reading, writing, speaking, and proper pronunciation. I teach from beginner to advanced levels, and I believe one is never too young or old to learn. I also teach my children French at home. I cover all tenses, vocabulary, proper sentence structure, reading comprehension, and sentences/phrases necessary for travel. I also teach via skype and vyew (smartboard system).

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th)

I have home schooled this range of grades for a period of five years simultaneously. I have also helped children to read, and break down basic concepts of math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and pre-algebra). I can also teach geography, basic life sciences, spelling, phonics, and writing skills for book reports, summaries, etc. I have also passed my Praxis I exam with scores of 181 in reading/176 in writing/185 in math, which qualifies me to teach these grades throughout the entire United States.
Phonics,

Phonics

I taught all of my nine children to read through the method of phonics. Upon entering kindergarten they were already above grade level. I believe it is the mastering of the letter sounds, consonant blends, and vowel sounds along with the combination of the diphthongs that help children to grasp the concept of reading. I work with achieving success with charts, cards, and the infamous McGuffy Readers, and CD's (Jump Start and Reader Rabbit).
Reading

Reading

I cover all aspects that are involved in reading: phonics, morpheme (breaking down the meaning of the word),syntax, comprehension, context clues, and inference. I encourage the student(s) to practice reading books/short stories that are of interest to them. I incorporate up to date articles from media sources as well. For the younger student (13yrs and below) we use safe and approved computer web sites as well to learn. I believe that it is important to have interactive learning involved in the process as well.

English

English,

English

I cover all areas of the written language: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, d.o. and i.o. objects, tenses, grammar rules, proper sentence structure, spelling, inference, and proper citation. I instruct how to write and correct short responses, and a paper, such as a short essay or a research paper.

Social Studies

I have taken several history classes covering the era of World War II, the history of women in the United States, and their contributions, dating from slavery to the present century. I have also taking a history class on race and racism covering the birth of Christianity in Europe to the segregation era here in the USA. I am also proficient in the Medieval Period, specifically its impact on France from its origination to its current political system.

Math is simply a matter of solving a coded problem. It is also a precept language. One cannot move forward until the first concept is understood. In pre-algebra, I cover all methods of operation: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and divisions, and method of operation (P.E.M.D.A.S.) I also teach how to solve for the "x" variable, geometry, word problems, exponents, square roots, decimals and graphs. I break down the math problems in step by step formation. I also show different methods for obtaining the solution. Most importantly, I make sure the student understands the problem they are trying to solve, and why their answer is correct, or incorrect. When it is incorrect, we backtrack to see where the error began, and I allow them to try to self correct the issue; if I see they are not aware, then I step in and demonstrate what to do. We then try another problem of the same nature and solve that one. I use different methods to teach lessons as well: textbooks, worksheets, math websites, skype, and vyew (smartboard method).

ADHD

I am very familiar with the learning methods and teaching styles, as well as the study skills that must be used in order to have a student succeed within the public or private school system. I am also very familiar with BIP's/504/IEP plans, and how they are used to help the child attain success. Not only am I a tutor, but I am also a parent of two children with ADHD, one with ADD, and the wife of a husband with ADHD as well. Over a period of five years we have learned what works with each child, and what doesn't. I realize that each child is not the same, therefore, I do not use the same methods; however, I do believe that organization, living by a schedule (consistency), and developing study habits will help a child attain the success he or she so greatly desires. To keep myself updated with tutoring children with special needs, I have taken two courses in Special Education, as well as a course in Educational Psychology, and am assisting in a Special Education classroom in a local area school.

Meeting the Child where they are

Tahoma has a spirit that is so welcoming that I believes cultivates the learning environment for my child. He has so much fun that I don't think he realizes he's learning and doing well!! She's been a great addition to my son's success in academia and confidence!

Outstanding teacher

Tahoma is teaching me how to conjugate verbs as well as teaching me fundamental rules on sentence structure. She really simplifies French by teaching me the differences between English and French.

Great Tutor

I contacted Mrs. L and left her my number and within a few days, she contacted me and gave me a run down on how she tutors kids and what to expect. I must say, when she came to the house, everything she told me, I saw first hand. I love the way my child listens to her when she explains the work, and the way she gives her a chance to solve the problems. She has only been tutoring my child for a few weeks, but I already see a change. She is more confident and eager to do her math. I'm glad I found Mrs. L- she is really a great tutor.
