In 1998 I began to develop a desire to teach and explored graduate programs in education. By 2001, I was a certified teacher working for the 13th largest school district in the nation. I have taught in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms, and currently teach 6th grade religion, language arts, and science for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Some of my greatest joy has been seeing students on the Autism spectrum find success in a regular education setting.
I have spent most of my career in public school, though this year I am teaching in an Archdiocesan school. I have taught after school, Saturday school, summer school, and worked for a private tutoring company for about four years when I lived in Georgia. My hope is that my record of success and joy in learning will be contagious and inspire you to achieve your goals!
I taught elementary (3rd grade to 5th grade) math from 2001 to 2013. During the 2012-2013 school year I worked with ten after-school students from fourth grade in a public school. They were identified as the lowest achieving math students out of 160 students. They were all successful on the state test at the end of the year and went to fifth grade at or above grade level in math. This was a moment of pride for me.
I have taught science from 3rd grade to 8th grade from 2001 to present day. I have attended more conferences, staff development, etc than I can even mention. For two years I taught other teachers how to teach science in the 13th largest school district in the nation.
I hold a minor in Spanish from the Universidad de Mexico en Guadalajara.
I hold a BA with honors from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
I look forward to hearing from you. Achieving your academic goals is my goal! In 1998 I began to develop a desire to teach and explored graduate programs in education. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified in the state of Maryland to teach elementary school from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. I was previously certified in Georgia and Alabama, and was found eligible for certification in the area, in Manitoba, Canada. I have taught elementary and middle school since August 2001. I hold an M.S.Ed. from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, that I earned in 2001.
I have extensive tutoring experience since 2002, working with children in title 1 settings after school, in small groups, and for Saturday school. I hold an M.S.Ed. in early childhood and elementary education and I had to complete a phonics program in order to earn my degree. Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama awarded the degree in 2001. I have been teaching in elementary and middle schools ever since.
