I am a retired teacher with many years working with students and watching them learn, grow, and delight in their abilities. As a teacher, I worked with children in Pre-K, Kindergarten, First and Second grades. I taught Reading, English, Spelling, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Handwriting.
As a mother of 4 and now grandmother of 10, I have helped my children and grandchildren with their own difficulties in learning. I know and understand the personal frustration a parent/grandparent feels when their child/grandchild are struggling. I believe that all these experiences help to make me the person who should be your child's tutor.
I have extensive experience teaching Reading in elementary grades. This includes phonics and vocabulary. I have constructed many games to aid in the learning of sounds and the meaning of words. Using these games helps children to have fun while learning. I use teacher constructed books to provide success for the child.
As a primary grade teacher, I have taught handwriting to many students. I have adapted the size of paper and writing instrument to help the child. I provide the child with positive writing opportunities.
As a primary grade teacher, I have taught Pre-Reading and Reading skills to children. One of these skills is ability to use phonics to assist in reading unknown words. At times, when a student is struggling, the use of games and tasks that are fun helps a child to practice this skill. I also use paper books with simple sentences and repetitive sentences to provide success.
I have touched upon several techniques I use to help children. I will work with your child to be successful and proud of his/her work. Hourly rate will be reduced if more than one student will be tutored at the same location.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
