About Kelly

My name is Kelly. I hold a BA in Political Science and a JD. After practicing civil litigation for several years, my family moved, and moved, and moved again (military). I'm currently on the East Coast, acting as a special needs advocate for my own children. I can assist with reading, writing, research, and critical thinking. My rates are negotiable if they cannot fit in your budget. I believe that learning is a skill, and that everyone has their own best approach to learning a subject. My goal is to help a student develop or learn an approach that works for them, as that will serve them the rest of their lives. My name is Kelly. I hold a BA in Political Science and a JD. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Law

I was a practicing attorney for 3 years, doing all manner of civil litigation in state courts. I am well versed in discovery, civil procedure, drafting motions, and drafting/negotiating agreements.

Public Speaking

Most people are afraid of public speaking. Standing in front of a group of people, trying to impart some information without getting harassed by the audience, or boring them, creates a very stressful environment. However, it is a fear that can be overcome. I have given speeches in front of large and small groups, at formal and informal events. Law school effectively erased my own timidity with public speaking because I was forced to speak, and trained to speak. In class, I was called on and had to answer questions in front of roughly 60 other people. I also was required to argue a mock case against two other students, in front of a panel of professors and judges. I participated in the Mock Trial team at my school, where my team argued a case, complete with witnesses, in front of a judge and jury. Public speaking can provide confidence, better argument skills, and help with critical thinking. I hope to help others obtain confidence in expressing themselves through public speaking.

Reading

I was a litigation attorney for 3 years, and have two young autistic children of my own. I believe everyone can love reading - we just need to identify and address any barriers to reading and find a subject matter they enjoy.
