About Douglas

I love to teach! It was during my doctoral work in Biology at the University of Pennsylvania that I made the realization that my true calling was to be an educator. After completing the Teacher Education Program at UPENN, I began teaching high school Chemistry. While teaching, I had an amazing epiphany. I LOVED chemistry despite the fact that I had struggled with it during college. My goal in teaching, as well as in tutoring, is to help students come to this same realization. Even difficult subjects can be fun, and mastering the concepts of those subjects leads to increased confidence to take on new challenges.

I believe that all of us are born scientists. We all make observations about the world, and ask questions about why it is the way it is. I have a deep understanding of the biological sciences and chemistry from course work completed for a PhD in biology, and in learning theory from my Doctorate in Science Education.

I am generally available for tutoring during weekday evenings, and on weekends and look forward to hearing from you to discuss how I can help you achieve your education goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

During my Master's degree studies in Biology I focused on the study of spider populations in the Smoky Mountains. I spent a summer collecting spiders from two habitats and then identified them and used the data to test an application designed to help estimate the total number of species (species richness) in the habitats. From there I completed my coursework in Biology at the University of Pennsylvania before transferring to a doctoral science education program at the University of Virginia. I have taught college level Biology.

Elementary Math

I was a member of the MAT program faculty at SMCM, and have taught high school science.
