About Natalie

I am currently a 5th Grade Special Education Resource Teacher/Special Education Coordinator with a Masters Degree in Education and well versed in teaching Common Core Reading and Common Core Math. I teach and tutor students with and without Special Needs. The core of my teaching philosophy stems from my special education background. As a special education teacher, I believe with all my heart that every child can learn. Every child has the ability inside them to grow and advance. Some may learn more than others and in different ways, but all can learn and should be treated with the respect and with an open heart.

My work as an educator allows me to do what I love...develop a relationship with my students based on respect, fun, and a want to succeed. My teaching is very interactive, and always in small groups or one-on-one. I believe in individualized teaching to each of my student’s strengths. I constantly use manipulatives and real-life experiences (like Montessori). I plan my lessons to be short and mobile, with stations so students move around the room. I tell my students that we all have bad days, but no matter what they do and what kind of day they have, I will be their cheerleader, on and off the “field” until they graduate. And I follow through with that and show them. Did I mention already that I believe learning should be fun, whenever possible?

I have worked as an elementary and middle school teacher for 5 years. For the past four years we have implemented the Common Core curriculum and have been trained on using Common Core with fidelity.

I hold a current Teaching Certificate in D.C. I have over 5 years of classroom and co-teaching experience as well as a Master's degree in Education. I have also led after-school tutoring sessions at my school. My reading strategy includes phonics, reading comprehension and fluency.

I am a certified K-12 Non-Categorical Special Education Teacher. I have five years of teaching experience where I have taught kids with ADHD, Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, Multiple Disabilities and more. Prior to teaching I served as Coordinator for the Office of Special Education within D.C. Public Schools. I am currently a Special Education Teacher and the Special Education Coordinator for my school.

If your looking for someone that will be dedicated to your child, care about your child as a student/person and someone that loves what they do then contact me so we can partner together to help your child reach their goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I have worked most recently as a teacher in a 2nd-5th grade Autism classroom where I applied the principles of ABA on a daily basis. My expertise includes programs like EdMark & VbMapp as well as differentiating instruction for low cognition students, non-verbal students, students with Aspergers and students that are high functioning.

Common Core

I am currently a 5th grade Special Education Inclusion Teacher and have been prior, a 2nd-4th grade Inclusion Teacher. Trained in unpacking the common core standards with an in depth understanding of how the standards work together, build upon each other and what standards are foundational for related skills. Familiar in assessing students in DIBELS, TRC, MyOn, ST Math and more. Versed in test preparation for the PARCC exam. Expertise area is improving student comprehension and reading skills.
