About Cheryl

Hands down, writing is my super power! I've made a good living as a technical writer and instructional designer/corporate trainer. My passion - my brain candy - is helping others conquer their fears and reduce their anxieties when required to write a paper and are stuck trying to find a focus, topic, theme, or thesis. I believe most have the fundamental ability to successfully write well-written college papers and achieve better than a passing grade. Let me help you reduce your stress and anxiety by introducing a few strategies that clarify, strengthen and structure any writing product. My strategies help you develop strong writing habits.

How did I get this way? you ask. Well, I have always embraced a good challenge; and challenged I was when I entered Shepherd University for the first time at 40. With a little coaching from a fantastic freshman professor, I realized I had an affinity for college writing. I became this professor's teaching assistant in the spring of my Freshman year and was then asked by the English Department Chair to become his teaching assistant in my Sophomore year. I tutored for this professor and in the writing lab, and was recruited as a technical writer in my final semester. I was also invited to teach Freshman English after graduation but switched to the community college when I moved to Maryland because I could instruct on Saturdays. At the community college, I taught Academic Foundations in Writing to individuals not quite ready for collegiate writing.

So, that is how I discovered writing was and is my super power! I CAN help you make it one of your super powers too!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, editing, proofing - all these I love doing; and I have enjoyed academic and professional success as a result. As an adjunct instructor of College Freshman English and Academic Foundations in Rhetoric and Composition, I have developed a coaching approach to instruction. At community college, my students were typically non-traditional or ESL (English as second language) and terrified of grammar and writing. By the end of my course, however, they reported that they could confidently write for both academic and professional audiences.

Grammar

Grammar has a rhythm one simply needs to learn to hear. Words used to name parts of speech are what make grammar scary. I know how to tame a comma and make a semicolon take its rightful place. I encourage other forms of punctuation to step forward and take their turn in the spotlight.

Literature

I specialize in helping High School AP and college students better analyze Early American Literature and Poetry, General Studies literature and poetry, Medieval Literature, and the bible as literature.

Proofreading

For 20+ years, I have ended up as the resident editor by which all written work must pass prior to moving onward to its destination point. Audiences of these edited products include the United State Congress, United States Marine Corps, United States Coast Guard, Inspector General, Commandant of the Coast Guard, federal judges and attorneys. Other audiences include CareFirst associates and Medicare Data warehouse business analysts. Presently, my audience includes managers throughout Johns Hopkins holdings.

Public Speaking

As a tutor, former adjunct instructor of English and Writing, and current corporate trainer, I've participated in countless presentations. I understand that many times presentations lack emphasis due to a lack of structure.

The structure of an oral argument or even informative presentation follows the same structure as those that are written - which happens to be my forte. When tutoring for public speaking, I first help students establish their structure and brainstorm their topics. Once a solid argument is in place, I assume the role of a coach and help them improve their delivery through practice and critical feedback.

Vocabulary

As a Senior Instructional Designer of complex training materials, I use my technical writing background to create dynamic training products for Johns Hopkins. I have over 20 years of government and corporate work experience. Prior to my professional career, I enjoyed the privilege of homeschooling my two birth children and advocating the educational needs of 28 foster children. I believe my experiences provide the tools necessary to tutor this subject.

Writing

I am a technical writer, instructional designer and trainer by profession. Not only am I an excellent writer, I know how to teach - which elevates my credentials as a tutor. From 2007-2011, I taught Freshman English 101 and 102 for Shepherd University, as well as an Academic Foundations in Writing course at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College. In easier terms - writing and writing instruction are my super powers.
