About Monica

My name is Monica and I am currently a special educator working in Montgomery County, MD. I love kids and want to see them be successful learners. I believe that every child is capable of learning and some just need different emphasis for the concepts to resonate with them. I have taught first through fifth grade special education so I am uniquely qualified to modify lessons and concepts in order for children to learn a skill.

I have been tutoring on Wyzant for 1 year now. I take every opportunity with my cousins and other children I come in contact with to interact with them about their learning, ask them about school, and just engage them in educational activities. I want to make learning fun and interactive for every student I work with so that they know learning new information can be enjoyable! My goal is to ensure your success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I received my B.A. in Elementary Education, graduated cum laude from undergrad and am a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society. I am a certified Elementary Education teacher and have taught special education students in 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades. I work with students across the three major subject areas: writing, reading, mathematics. I employ multiple strategies and techniques to reach every child. Whatever a student's learning style may be, I ensure that my students have the tools they need to be successful.

Phonics

I am more than qualified to tutor reading as I work with all of my special education students daily throughout the school year with reading. Depending on how severe the reading need, I work with students in either a small group or 1-on-1 setting. I analyze the specific areas students are having difficulty when reading and I target my instruction to those areas. I have used many different techniques such as practicing sight words, learning vowel sounds, teaching how to break words apart and put them back together, and of course, the best method is to actually read; read together, read on their own, just read for practice.

Special Needs

I received my Masters of Education from Boston College in 2014 in the area of Mild/Moderate Disabilities. I am certified to teach Pre-K through 8th grade special education. I have been working in Montgomery County Public Schools, teaching special education students in small group and 1 on 1 settings in the various subject areas. I have worked with students with various disabilities such as developmental delays, specific learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism, and emotional disabilities.
