About Laura

My career in education includes twenty-two years as a teacher in competitive college prep schools in the Washington, D.C. area, three years in student support for IB students in an international school in Berlin, Germany, and seven months as a teacher of adult English language learners in Czechoslovakia. I have experience in modifying content for students with mild dyslexia, and I have done many hours of one-on-one tutoring. I have supported students in writing essays including the IB Extended Essay, college admissions essays, and essays related to topics in history and social studies. Although I am not an English teacher per se, I have also supported students in writing English compositions and research papers.

In guiding students through their work, I begin with what the student knows and build from there (known as a constructivist approach). My goal is to provide a useful process so that in the end the student feels confident in going forward. When the student needs re-teaching of material, we slow down and review; where the student indicates a firm grasp of concepts, we power on. The approach is individualized and sensible.

I am happy to tutor middle and high school students (with a parent or guardian present in the home), college students who may need support with writing, and adult women (individuals or small groups) who wish to improve their English language skills. I can also teach beginner guitar!

I look forward to hearing from you and setting up a plan to meet your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I started my career teaching middle school English and history and moved into teaching social studies. I have a strong background in grammar, mechanics, spelling, vocabulary, and composition. I am comfortable discussing literary themes and techniques, particularly when a student is seeking focus for writing an essay. I am also interested in starting a small study group of Spanish-speaking women who would like to improve or perfect their English skills.

ESL/ESOL

I developed an ESL program for adult factory workers in (then) Czechoslovakia and taught there for seven months. Upon returning to the States, I successfully completed the Oxford Seminars TESOL 90-hour training course at George Washington University. Most recently, my three years teaching at Berlin Brandenburg International School involved providing academic support for students, 80% of whom did not have English as their first language. I tutored them in English and in several other subject areas including biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as supporting their work in the International Baccalaureate program.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar since the age of ten. I led the Catholic folk mass when I was only fourteen years old. Before switching to education, I majored in music for my first two years of college. More recently, as a member of the teaching staff, I sponsored the guitar club at Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland. The mission of the club was to provide a weekly forum for students of all skill level (but most of whom were beginners or advanced beginners) to play guitar and to prepare for the annual coffee house for original works.

Writing

Having taught for many years in competitive college prep schools, I have countless hours of working with students to improve their writing skills in the classroom and one-on-one. In addition to teaching writing in the context of social studies classes, I am also the self-published author of two books: one, a memoir, and the other a novel. Furthermore, I played a central role in writing, researching, and designing a 40-page handbook currently being used widely by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in their migrant education program.

Excellent Guitar Lessons!! — I'm very grateful to have found Laura to help improve my skills on the guitar -- Thus far I have learned multiple strumming techniques, picking, and how to jazz up songs to make them more interesting backgrounds for singing. I also improved my ability to keep a steady tempo and play chords. Currently trying to succeed at bar chords, and Laura's patience will certainly help me get there! ...
