One of my great joys is helping people with their spoken and written English. With a doctorate in anthropology and years teaching on the college level, I have helped countless students to improve their writing--whether the issue has been grammar, syntax, or vocabulary. Because much of my work has been as a public health consulting doing social science research, I also have expertise in academic, technical and proposal writing as well as creative writing. If you need help with public speaking, I'm a seasoned public speaker and would be happy to show you how to gain confidence in your presentation skills.
For 23 year, I worked as a public health consultant doing social science research and evaluation on a variety of projects for Federal Government and State Government agencies and non-profit organizations. Since that time, I have started a new career as a teacher and tutor--doing what I love the best: empowering students by increasing their knowledge, skills and understanding of important issues and topics that will enable them to operate more confidently and effectively in our globalized working environment.
I recently served as a part-time adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, University College, teaching a course in Intercultural Communication and Leadership for the Graduate School of Management and Technology for a culturally diverse group of students who work during the day and attend night classes for graduate degrees in such areas as management, health administration, and technology. My prior teaching experience includes teaching World History to undergraduates at Montgomery College, and cultural and medical anthropology courses to undergraduates at the University of California, Berkeley. Also, I have taught two courses (Culture, Community, and Cuisine, and Culture, Health, and Healing in the U.S.), for the OSHER Institute of Retired Learning at Johns Hopkins University). I have written articles for publication in professional public health journals and Federal Government monographs, as well as multiple research and evaluation reports and other publications for such Federal agencies as the National Cancer Institute, the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, and Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. I have mentored a number of young researchers and helped them to apply successfully to doctoral programs at different U.S. universities. I have also provided in-depth editing and technical feedback to colleagues and clients seeking to publish articles in peer-reviewed journals or other publications.
In general, my years of research and evaluation work, along with travel abroad, and anthropological training, have helped me to get along well with all sorts of people from a wide variety of social, cultural, professional and other backgrounds, age groups, and different parts of the world.
I really look forward to working one-on-one with students, helping them become more proficient in the subjects in which I have expertise. To me, the most important part of teaching is giving my students the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need for a successful future while making the learning experience not only useful but also fun! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Ph.D. in Cultural/Medical Anthropology which I obtained in May, 1987, from the University of California, Berkeley. I also have Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Anthropology--both also obtained at the University of California, Berkeley. Since 1987, I have used the methods, skills, and experience gained from my anthropological training to perform research and/or evaluation for a variety of Federal Government public health projects for such agencies as CDC, NCI, NIAID, NIAAA, and SAMHSA. I have also taught two courses in anthropology for the Johns Hopkins OSHER program as well as recently teaching (6 times) the course on Culture, Communication, and Leadership for the Graduate School of Management and Technology at the University of Maryland.
I will help students to become effective public speakers by drawing on my years of experience in teaching and making presentations of studies I've conducted or professional trainings before professional groups, e.g., the American Anthropological Association, the American Society of Gerontology, before expert panels, for State Tobacco Control Program Directors for CDC. I will show students how to develop PowerPoint presentations that highlight the most important aspects of the topics they're presenting, how to connect with their audiences--keeping their interest and answering their questions satisfactorily. Most importantly, I'll give students useful tips on dealing with "stage fright" so they'll be able to speak clearly and with confidence before different audiences and by so doing, "knock 'em dead!"
