About Bernard

As a teacher, instructor, and director of chamber of commerce for more than twenty years, it is with great pleasure that I want to see people succeed in whatever endeavor they might be involved. My approach to teaching is a hands-on one and a practical one. Having worked for many years directly with businesses, it is with very practical examples that each business lesson is presented to students. As a director of chamber of commerce I was personally in charge of business development and of training. As a teacher doing his job with love my wife makes fun of me by saying that I over-explain. The reason is that when I have to explain a topic I want to make sure that the topic is thoroughly understood. Actually this might be done with very few words or with as many words as needed depending on how open-minded is the student. I enjoy tutoring because I can adjust my technique to the ability of the student. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

In addition to having taken Algebra 1 as a student, I have taught that subject for many years as a teacher and substitute teacher. I currently work as a substitute teacher at a Charter School where I regularly design and teach lessons in Algebra 1. I use a hands-on approach and everyday life examples to make this subject easy for students to assimilate.

Anatomy

In addition to courses in Anatomy, I have practiced Anatomy as a Veterinary Technologist at the National Institutes of Health and as Biology Teacher. Any student in the field of Anatomy can count on me. Practical cases of dissection included Vertebrates but also Invertebrates.

Biology

In addition to formal training as a biology teacher, I have co-authored a Biology textbook (published by Bordas). For 8 years I have worked at the National Institutes of Health as a Veterinary Technologist. For more than 10 years I have taught Biology. I bring to the teaching of Biology the theoretical knowledge, the know-how of a professional teacher, and the practical side of a laboratory scientist.

Business

In addition from having an MBA with a major in managerial accounting, I have a doctorate degree in International business. For the doctorate degree the credits included topics such as international accounting and taxation, rational decision-making, international management, leadership in a diverse and multicultural environment, survey techniques, global challenges, innovation, corporate responsibility, global leadership, and different research approaches.

Chemistry

In addition to theoretical courses in chemistry I have used chemistry for a Master Thesis. The topic of the thesis was: "Changes in Levels of Hydrogen Cyanide in Baton de Manioc during processing". This combination of theoretical and practical training will be of great use for any student of chemistry.

Economics

In addition to theoretical training in Cornell University and at Argosy University, I taught Economics in High School. I have also applied Economics as a business owner. I will be quite helpful in tutoring the beginners in Economics.

Finance

In addition to training in Finances, I have worked for the last 10 years in the Finance Industry. I have a good understanding of different financial markets, corporate finance, and different financial products, as well as personal finance. A combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience in finance will be quite helpful to my students.

French

I am a native French speaker. I have used that language for schooling up to the Master degree and still use French at home as a vehicle of communication. I can make it easier for anybody to learn that language.

Genetics

Genetics is the science of gene. Genes are the characteristics found on DNA and which are transmitted from parents to
offspring.

As a biology teacher for 12th grade students, an associate professor at the University, and a veterinary technologist, the use of genetics has been part of my daily interest for more than 15 years. It has been a great pleasure to follow the genetic theory from the research of Mendel, to the Darwinian theory, and to the modern Genomics. Other modern genetic activities such as genetic engineering have been part of my daily occupation as veterinary technologist during the last six years.

To better understand the science of genetics, let us go from the notion of cell. The cell is the structural and functional unit of all living organisms. In the cell is found the genetic material constituted by the deoxyribonucliec acid (DNA) and the ribonucleic acid (RNA). The biological information is encoded in the DNA and is divided into discrete units called genes. The genome is the biological information needed to build and maintain a living organism. It is that genome or genetic material that is the object of the science of genetics. Each gene expression helps to produce specific proteins through the process of transcription and translation. The transcription refers to the making of an RNA messenger (mRNA) from a DNA. The translation is the construction of a protein (from amino acids) by an mRNA from the order of a DNA. The DNA is also characterized by the ability of replication referring to the ability of one DNA to reproduce many other DNAs. The importance of Genetics is linked to the above characteristics of DNA and to the ability of changes in the structure of genes through mutations. These mutations (genetic disorders) might cause diseases or just be at the origin of the production of new proteins. It is estimated that the Human genome has 30000 to 40000 genes.

Geometry

My approach with geometry is to demystify Mathematics. Any chapter in Mathematics must be based on practical application and this is more so in Geometry than in any other topic. My students generally enjoyed that approach.

GRE

My approach to GRE preparation consists of: Developing the vocabulary acquisitions and the fast reading as well as essay writing through appropriate drills. Comprehensive approach, critical tools and strategies are used to make sure that students use basic concepts to learn instead of just memorizing everything. My students will enjoy this approach.

Prealgebra

This is a foundation course in Mathematics. For that reason my approach is not only to teach the course content, but to make sure that the student is motivated about Mathematics. The motivation will be created by showing to the student how pre-algebra is applied daily to life.

Precalculus

My approach in teaching precalculus and calculus is a very practical one. This student walked from very practical cases to more theoretical ones. The main concern is to demystified precalculus and calculus and to make sure that the student can applied the concept to any case at hands.
