About Marietta

My calling has always been teaching. I’ve dabbled in other areas like Financial Advising etc but my first love is teaching. I am a Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry major with a minor in Biochemistry. I can teach a wide range of subjects. I’ve taught Middle school and High school Math, Integrated Science, Chemistry, Geography and even Music. I also possess an M Sc. in Computer Science and as an Associate Professor at Hampton University in VA, taught Computer Programming (mainly in java), Computer Security and Computer Literacy (MS Office Tools). I’ve also tutored adults in Community Colleges, as well as those pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chemistry, Math and Computer Science concepts. I did a postgraduate Diploma course in Education from the University of the West Indies and was one of two students to graduate at the top of my class with distinction in theory as well as practice.

I am passionate about everything I do and my love of learning continues to grow. I meet with my students for face to face teaching at their homes or an agreed upon location. I am also not averse to online teaching, working one-on-one with students via Skype or using visually collaborative classrooms. I tend to be very detail-oriented encouraging students to use a logical method toward developing an understanding of whatever the field of learning. I am however not averse to traditional methods of tutoring if students are more inclined to that approach.

Cancellation Policy: Since each student is assigned a time-slot that could have been assigned to another, and precious time is spent in preparing for each student's class, 24 hour notice of any cancellation will be appreciated. To provide the student with the best opportunity for course success, cancelled classes should be rescheduled as soon as possible.

Each year I will be unavailable between 7:00-9:00 pm on the following days:- January 5th, March 7th and 9th, Good Friday, May 10th, July 25th, and September 26th and 30th. My day of choice to reschedule these classes will be a Saturday, but a weekday may also be chosen if possible.

No matter where you are at in the course that you are pursuing, if it lies within my subject area scope I will definitely guide you to excellence in that area. Contact me and we could start today to place success within your grasp.

Thank you so much for your comments. I really must say that Candus is one of the best tutees that I've ever had. I taught her Algebra I in Middle School and I'm currently her Geometry tutor. A wonderful student, she is indeed a pleasure to teach. Respectful, gracious, alert, attentive, reflective, hard-working, and intent on being the best that she can be, Candus definitely exhibits the characteristics of a high achiever and I am committed to ensuring that she fulfills her potential.

Marietta replied on 2/27/2014

Thank you so much for your recommendation, Delonte. You were alert, attentive and participated well during our tutoring session. I enjoyed it immensely and found it most productive. If this attitude continues at school, as well as during our sessions, your Algebra 2 grade will improve dramatically. I, too, look forward to our next session.

"Very pleasant"

Let me begin this comment by quoting from my cancellation policy which I sent out to all my students:

"Since each student is assigned a time-slot that could have been assigned to another, and precious time is spent in preparing for each student's class, 24 hr notice of any class cancellation will be appreciated."

I enjoyed working with this student and enjoyed the time spent in preparing for the classes. However, before accepting the responsibility as tutor, even though I was informed of the student's learning disability, I was not made aware of a serious condition that led to repeated cancellations of classes with, on many occasions, less than 24-hr notice. It is very difficult for learning to take place with such repeated cancellations, especially when there is a time limit to achieve certain results. My apologies for any inconvenience caused.

"A very pleasant tutor with an an excitiement about teaching"

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have over 20 years teaching Algebra to Middle School, High School and Community College students. In working with students I quickly assess their needs in order to find the best way to help them to succeed and excel in Algebra. Even though the subject may cover more or less of what is stated below it generally explores the following:

Algebra 1
Linear Equations and Inequalities in a Single Variable
Introduction to functions
Linear Equations and Inequalities in Two Variables
Systems of Equations and Inequalities
Data Analysis and Probability
Exponents and Polynomials
Quadratic and Exponential Functions

Algebra 2

I have over 20 years teaching Algebra II to High School students. Students pursuing Algebra II build on and explore in greater depth the knowledge they have gained in Algebra I. Again the curriculum may vary slightly in different areas. The subject explores the following areas:

Algebra II
Linear Equations and Inequalities
Functions (including inverse functions and, composite functions)
Linear systems and Matrices
Polynomial and Rational Functions
Sequences and Series
Radical Epressions and Equations
Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
Quadratic Functions and Relations (parabolas, circles, ellipses and hyperbolas)

Algebra II/Trigonometry adds the following trigonomteric concepts to the course:

Basics of trigonometry to solve angle measures
Evaluate trig functions using a calculator
Fundamental trig identities
Evaluate trigonometric functions
Define trig functions of real numbers using the unit circle
Evaluate trig functions
Law of Sines
Law of Cosines
Sum and difference formulas for sines, cosines and tangents
