About April

I absolutely love to help people learn, especially if it’s about art (or dance - my other great love). My specialties with classic art forms are pencil sketching and oil paint, though I also have experience with watercolors and acrylic paints. My best subject matters are organic forms - humans, animals, and fantasy creatures.

I have also been working steadily for the last 16 years as a graphic designer, giving me extensive computer graphic experience. I use Adobe Creative Suite products on a daily basis, especially Illustrator and Photoshop. I have had some experience with web design as well, though I will be up front: I do not know code. Instead, I’ve used web-building programs, such as Adobe GoLive.

I’m an artist, I’m a dance teacher, I’m a mother. During my own child’s time at elementary school as well as the time I spent assisting with Sunday school classes at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Harford County, I had the opportunity to occasionally come in as a guest to teach brief art classes with children.

It was enormously rewarding! I get along with people of all ages very well (all of my dance students are adults). I believe in being encouraging, but I’m not afraid to criticize just enough to help my students progress. I won’t hammer you, but I won’t coddle you either. Neither is conducive to a good learning environment. Art should be rewarding and fun as well as a skill that can amaze and astound.

I'm experienced in both traditional art and computer graphics. Traditional: pencil, and oil paint are specialties; also have worked with charcoal, ink, pastels, watercolor and acrylic; Computer Graphics: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop are specialties; also work with InDesign.

I've illustrated several children's books (under the pseudonym Artemis B.), designed several websites and have been a steadily employed graphic designer since February 2000.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have a lifetime of drawing experience (being in my 40's, that adds up!). I do have an AA in Commercial Art, which of course included Drawing classes. However, I believe my experience as an illustrator, and in graphic design (16+ years), have contributed even more.

Graphic Design

I have been steadily employed as a graphic designer and production artist since February 2000. Most of my work has been for F. W. Haxel Flag, Banner, and Sign Co., but I've also done additional freelance work for various clients over the years and now have steady freelance work coming in from Office Centre in Havre de Grace (this in addition to my continuing work for F. W. Haxel). I work with Adobe Creative Suite on a daily basis. I've used Adobe Illustrator daily for over 16 years now. Photoshop... almost as much.

Painting

I have a lifetime of painting experience (being in my 40's, that adds up!). I do have an AA in Commercial Art, which of course included Painting classes. However, I believe my experience as an illustrator, and in scenic design for local theatre companies contributed even more to my painting skills.
