As an engineering manager, I spend much of my day explaining technical subjects to non-technical managers as well as to my employees. I enjoy this part of my job so much that for the past eight years I have tutored middle school, high school and college students one-on-one in all levels of math and science. I have successfully tutored students in pre-algebra, algebra, intermediate and advanced algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, physics and SAT preparation.
I believe in working one-on-one with students to help them understand what they are learning in school. I believe that homework is necessary to reinforce and solidify what they are learning so I often give extra homework. Often students just need someone to reinforce what they are learning or to explain it in a different way. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses and each must be taught as an individual. My experience in tutoring math, starting with my own three children, is extensive, so that I have always found a way to explain difficult concepts to help a student understand it.
In high school math especially, too many students fall behind in skills that they need to build on. Then they develop the attitude that "I just can't do math." I believe that everyone can "do math" if they're firmly grounded in the basic principles and continue to practice through homework. I have uncovered weakness in earlier subjects while tutoring more advanced math. By finding and correcting these problems, the student improves, gains confidence and can often complete the subject with limited or no additional help.
I look forward to talking with you and helping your student improve his/her math and science skills. My son has had a handful of tutors over the years but not until working with Len was he actually excited about his upcoming lessons. Len was able to communicate very effectively with him and explain the concepts so they were easy for him to understand and retain. The tutoring was so effective, my son now has an A in Algebra II and for now is able to maintain this without regular tutoring. But, be assured, if and when the need arises again, Len will be the first call we make! I would highly recommend him for any tutoring needs.
Len is great, he was able to help be understand the concept of math, by placing himself at my level of understanding, by giving me different type of example, he is very approachable and easy to talk to, he is very kind, and patient, very respectful, Len helped me refresh my memory of junior high and high school math, I will recommend Len to everyone at this time, thanks Len.
Len is a very good tutor that helps my daughter to excel. He works with her weak areas and helps her to reach her maximum potential. Money well spent!
Len is everything we wanted in a tutor -- flexible, accessible, professional, kind, adaptable, knowledgeable and goal-oriented. Len displayed a unique desire to help our daughter, before he even met her. He quickly assessed our daughter's strengths and weaknesses and motivated her to overcome her challenges. We are very satisfied with the end results for the school year and intend to use his services as her curriculum challenges increase. I highly recommend Len!
Len has been working with my son for 3 weeks now. We are VERY pleased with the results. My son has gone from failing Geometry to passing the class. His test scores show how much he understands what he is doing now. Len has gotten him up to date on the current lessons, reviewed the past lessons where my son was struggling and now they have jumped ahead to the next chapter. He is on time and always writes up a complete review of the lesson for us to review later. When I asked my son to rate him he said "4 1/2" stars. Pretty high marks from a 13 year old.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
