Public Speaking

Public Speaking is one of the biggest fears that people have. It can be frightening and daunting for many, but it doesn't have to be. I used to be afraid to speak in front of others, but repeated exposure cured me of that fear. I have spoken in front of large groups of parents at school-related functions and presented in front of colleagues at staff meetings and at grad school. Preparedness, practice, and support are all helpful in getting over this fear, but sometimes people need more. I promise to be patient, non-judgmental, and gradually prepare you for your public speaking venue. I give spelling and phonics assessments to determine students needs and then develop an action plan to help them strengthen their phonics skills. We work on identifying, sorting, and classifying words by sounds, letters, word families, and also developing phonemic awareness. Students read predictable readers, which stress rhyming words, word families, and predictable spelling patterns in order to secure skills. We also study onset and rhyme, do word sorts, phoneme segmentation, deletion, and use magnetic letters and white boards to practice manipulating and creating words. In the primary grades, students use phonics in order to build word skills, develop phonemic awareness, and learn letter-sound correspondence; however, students in the upper elementary grades need word study and phonics as well. I incorporate study skills into my daily instruction and encourage students to keep their desks neat and organized. We also use color-coded folders, notebooks, outlines, flashcards in order to be successful. My students and I brainstorm frequently about how to maximize our learning potential by studying with friends, self-monitoring their progress, and asking for help and clarification when needed. We also practice underlining key information, circling key words, and using highlighters to support comprehension. We practice test-taking skills daily and my students have had the highest reading scores in the school for 3 years in a row. I have a 90+% student success rates in state-testing. Social Studies is a broad term given to address the following topics: Civics/Government, Geography, Economics and History. I teach these concepts daily, and also incorporate current events through the use of Scholastic News and Time for Kids. I also have taken Reading Content area courses and Sheltered Immersion courses, which focus on making content knowledge more comprehensible to students. I incorporate the use of reading strategies, graphic organizers, vocabulary mapping, and Reader's Theater into my teaching to make concepts interesting and understandable for students. I have always had a passion for history and excelled in my courses in high school and college. I took honors American History and AP European History, and also excelled in World History and Western Civilizations. I took geography courses in college and believe it is important to incorporate map skills and reading into my instruction. Students use maps and create maps in my classroom, so that they have a strong understanding of concepts. We also examine text features and how they support the article and main idea. I believe in incorporating historical fiction, primary and secondary documents, and media & technology into my instruction, so that students get a well-rounded learning experience and learning is tailored to meet the needs of diverse learners. My students study Regions and the State of Maryland, so we discuss the geography, resources, people, and economics in these regions. We always focus on key vocabulary and I help them develop real-life applications to help them understand the words. We create maps, make charts, and diagrams, do hands-on projects, and read historical fiction in order to help them develop historical, geographical, and cultural concepts. I believe social studies is best learned, when it is experienced, rather than just read from a textbook. That is why it is important to help students understand how the concepts relate to real life and make learning fun and comprehensible.

Study Skills

Study Skills is a broad term but has many techniques in order to be successful. Some of which include: Being organized, time and space management, Using memory devices and tricks, using study guides, taking careful notes, and paying attention in class. Tutors can provide students with techniques such as organization of materials, study methods (flash cards, study guides), examine course objectives, and empowering students to ask questions when they are confused or need further clarification. I incorporate study skills into my daily instruction and encourage students to keep their desks neat and organized. We also use color-coded folders, notebooks, outlines, flashcards in order to be successful. My students and I brainstorm frequently about how to maximize our learning potential by studying with friends, self-monitoring their progress, and asking for help and clarification when needed. We also practice underlining key information, circling key words, and using highlighters to support comprehension. We practice test-taking skills daily and my students have had the highest reading scores in the school for 3 years in a row. I have a 90+% student success rates in state-testing. I expose students to materials and equip them with strategies for success, so that they feel confident and relaxed during testing, and in the classroom. Students can benefit from setting attainable goals, using outlines, flash cards, and setting up a time and place to study. I help struggling students after school develop their phonics and study skills. We talk about organization of materials: using folders, keeping a clean desk, strategies to make sure they complete their homework and turn it in. We also practice test-taking skills, such as process of elimination, underlining keywords, rereading the passage, so that students can become proficient test-takers and studiers. Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teach Elementary subjects from K-12. In reading, I promote the 5 principals of Reading: Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension. In math, I teach the four basic operations,promote number sense, and work on other math concepts. In Social Studies, I teach historical perspective, geography, and economics. In Science, I teach mastery of the scientific method, theories, and hypotheses and real world applications of material. I have taught grades 3-6 throughout my career and have tutoring experience working with all ages from Pre-kindergarten to high school. I specialize in reading and social studies, as well as Spanish, although I am certified to teach all elementary subjects. I have taught elementary subjects for about 10 years and enjoy working with new students. I have also taught summer school, worked at Sylvan Learning Centers, and taught after school remediation and enrichment programs. I use a variety of teaching methods, which include cooperative learning, hands-on materials, technology-integrated instruction. I am familiar with state standards and visit mdk12.org frequently in order to ensure that my lessons are aligned with state standards, and that they meet high expectations and levels of rigor. I also know a plethora of academic websites that students enjoy visiting to enhance their learning experience. I also take the time to get to know each student and analyze their learning styles, so that I can best accommodate their needs. I use centers, small-group work, and individual conferencing to meet the needs of my diverse learners. Elementary education is my passion and I love teaching and designing lessons to motivate and challenge my students.

ESL/ESOL

ESL is a term used to refer to English as a Second Language. It is the role of ESL instructors to help build oral & written language, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Tutors should be patient and know the levels of language acquisition and understand students' native educational experiences, in order to help students transition from their native language to English. Some accommodations include: Use of scribe, verbatim/selected reading, extended time, small group setting, limited number of questions, shorter passages, frontloading of vocabulary, use of realia and experiential learning, as well as cooperative group, discovery-based and total physical response (TPR) techniques. I have worked at schools with high ELL populations for the past 6 years, and have worked with ESOL instructional coaches in order to make my lessons comprehensible to ELLs. I have completed several classes and completed coursework, including Teaching Reading and Writing to ELLS, Sheltered Immersion, Semantic Mapping, Reading Comprehension for ELL, and am training to become a certified ESOL instructor. My professor suggested that I take the Praxis in order to get certified and wrote me a letter of recommendation for the program.

Spanish

Spanish is an easy language to acquire, given the proper tools and study habits. I studied Spanish in both high school and college, and excelled in the coursework. In high school, I was in enriched classes, and watched movies, wrote reports, and did presentations completely in Spanish. In college, I studied the language as well as literature and excelled due to the strong foundation my four years in high school have provided me. I currently teach a high number of English-Language Learners (ELL) and communicate with parents in both Spanish and English. I plan on taking the ESOL Praxis and getting certified to teach ESOL as well.

I have taught writing for the past 12 years and am Reading Specialist certified. I know the standards and with practice can help you become an excellent writer.

Praxis

Praxis is a test given by Educational Testing Systems in order to certify students for teaching. Praxis Requirements vary from state to state and include different passing scores from each state. There are usually multiple choice questions and sometimes writing is required. I have met the Praxis I and II requirements in PA, DE, NJ, and MD and am a highly qualified teacher. I also teach in a tested grade, so test-taking skills and strategies is part of my daily instruction. I excel in Reading, Mathematics, Writing, Curriculum & Instruction, and Content Knowledge. I am currently preparing to take the Praxis for ESOL certification and visit ETS' website frequently to access their study guides and sample questions. I also know how to find the qualifying information to meet the different state requirements.

I am English and Reading Specialist certified and work in Reading Intervention. I specialize in test-taking strategies, reading and writing instruction.

I specialize in test preparation, focusing in the areas of reading and writing. Both subjects can be very daunting, but using tips and knowing the test are excellent tools to have in your belt. I use consistent strategies so that the task becomes less challenging for your child, while boosting their confidence and ease with the subject.
