About Lavinia

I have over twenty years experience in education. I've taught 4th through 8th grade. Along with general elementary subjects, I've also taught test taking skills. And, I have also been a math department chairperson at one of the first charter schools in New Jersey.

I love learning and love teaching. Reading, language arts, history and math are my favorite subjects. After a career in corporate America, where I often ended up in the training department, I decided to become a teacher. I started a master's program in education administration and supervision while teaching full-time.

I am a strong believer that learning should be student-driven, fun, and engaging. Even more important is that we both learn from the teaching and learning process. Learning is participatory and collaborative!!

I love working with students one-on-one in order to give them the specialized attention that they need to improve and hopefully encourage a love for learning. Because each student is an individual, I utilize Gardner's Multiple Intelligences to identify YOUR best learning styles! We will incorporate hands-on learning as well as project-based instruction, where applicable.

We will work on building a solid foundation to learning that you will be able to utilize throughout your academic career. Together, we will set learning objectives so that you can reach higher levels of proficiency in all of your subjects.

I look forward to teaching and learning with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I am a certified teacher. As a result of my background with Maryland state assessments, I am familiar with Common Core and the PARCC assessments. I am able to access the resources and lessons provided by the Maryland State Department of Education for teachers to provide classroom instruction using Common Core.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified elementary school teacher. I have taught 4th through 8th grades. In grades 4 to 6, I taught all general education classes; this included reading, math, language arts/whole language, science and social studies. In addition to classroom teaching, I also provided Home and Hospital instruction to students in grades 5 through 6, in all subjects. During my first year teaching, my sixth grade students scored proficient in reading and math on the state assessment. As a result, I received an award from my principal. For one year, I served as math department chair at a charter school.

Elementary Math

I have taught math to students in grades 4 thru 8. I served as a Math department chairperson at a charter school. I am familiar with and have implemented Common Core state standards for math and English Language Arts/Literacy; which includes writing.

Homeschool

I am a certified teacher. I have provided instruction to students who were on Home and Hospital. I have taught 4th through 8th grades in all general subjects. I would utilize the authorizing school districts (MD) as well as available Common Core and supplemental materials suggested by the Maryland State Department of Education.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft products including Outlook for many years for personal and professional reasons. I have trained others on the best use of MS Outlook at work and in the community. I continue to use Outlook daily.

Public Speaking

My undergraduate degree is in Communications. I was required to take 4 speech classes and pass a speech proficiency to earn my degree. I have prepared students for a state public speaking assessment (NJ).

And, while working in assessments for 14 years, all of the training sessions that I have presented required that I speak before small and large groups of people.

I can help build your confidence and prepare you for formal and informal public speaking engagements.

Reading

I am a certified elementary school teacher. I have taught 4th through 8th grades in all general education classes; this included reading, math, language arts/whole language, science and social studies. During my first year teaching, my sixth grade students scored proficient in reading and math on the state assessment. As a result, I received an award from my principal.

Knowledgeable and Patient

We studied Multiplication facts. We also studied fact families. We did a fraction review. It was a pleasure to have her as my tutor. Looking forward to our next session this Friday.
