About Brandyn

I love being an educator because the Latin root word, "educere," means "to bring out." That means that my job as your educator is to bring out the best in you! As a Laureate Scholar and a professional artist I have the discipline and passion of both the arts and academia worlds. My creativity aids me in planning engaging lessons that allow students to explore subject matter in a more hands-on way. I am trained in project-based and brain-based learning and I pride myself on being able to reach students where they are and push them to the next level of understanding.

I am formally trained in all elementary level subjects (math, reading, science, social studies, and writing) as I have taught Pre-k through 6th grade in the DC Charter School System. I have also tutored for SAT prep, pre-algebra, Algebra 1, Spanish 1, English (grammar and literature), and writing.

My mother has been a math teacher for over 15 years. It is the language of our home and I have become as enthused by it as she. I earned a full academic scholarship to Howard University based solely on my SAT scores and math was my highest. I have taught pre-algebra in the school system for 2 years as well.

I earned a perfect score on my Praxis test in Reading. I have a BFA in Theatre Performance during which I studied speech and diction in order to be heard and understood on the stage. That with my play analysis and acting background cone together to make me an excellent educator for literature analysis and public speaking.

I offer free consultations for new students so that we can get to know each other and set goals together before we begin. Feel free to email me for more information or to set up your free consultation today!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I taught the Common Core curriculum for K, 4th, and 5th grade at a charter school in Washington, D.C. I also attended various professional development sessions throughout my four years of teaching for the school system on the Common Core curriculum.

Elementary (K-6th)

I passed the Core Academic Praxis in reading, writing and math for Elementary K-6th. I also taught 4th grade and Kindergarten as the lead teacher, and was a math and reading coach for 5th and 6th grade for a year.

Elementary Math

Taught 5th grade math at DC Public Charter School

English

Scored a 3 on AP English exams. Studied theatre and play analysis at the collegiate level.

Prealgebra

I have mathematics education training from Walden University and did my student teaching in a middle school math classroom.

Reading

I taught 4th and 5th grade English Language Arts using the Common Core curriculum in the DC Charter School System.

Theatre

I have a B.F.A. in Theatre Arts with a concentration in Musical Theatre Performance from Howard University. I was also a Laureate Scholar, president of the Howard Players performance ensemble, and director of various performances throughout my matriculation there.

Voice (Music)

I was trained in the anatomy and physiology of the voice as well as sight singing, music theory, beginner's piano, and proper vocal techniques. Beyond my degree program at Howard University, I studied Musical Theatre at NYU Tisch in the CAP21 program.
