Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (Physics and Math)
I studied physics and math in college, going on to a PhD in physics. I currently work off and on at a NASA lab, where I have a research grant. Since I am between grants now, I have some hours to tutor while I work
on new grants. I enjoy math and physics and use them almost everyday, so my skills are sharp. I've taught college classes, mentored students in research, and given research presentations at the college, high school and middle school levels. In addition, I have taught English to non-native speakers in South Korea.
I began tutoring as an undergraduate student, and have tutored many students at middle school, high school and college levels. I am proficient in all types of math:pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, physics w/wo calculus, modern physics, electromagnetic theory, quantum mechanics, relativity, thermodynamics, etc. I have an intuitive, problem solving approach that I convey to my students. I enjoy seeing students pick up what I understand and gain confidence to do well in exams. People find me easygoing and down-to-earth. I have seen excellent results in all of the students I have tutored who have made an effort to learn. I studied physics and math in college, going on to a PhD in physics. Dr. Tom was able to quickly assess what was needed for extraordinarily complicated assignments. He is having to teach several classes at one time, in order to bring my daughter up to speed. What is the best is that what he has gone through has been able to be applied to other courses. He also quizzes on some previously covered material, just to make sure it is sticking. Thank you, Dr. Tom!
Tom was very knowledgeable. My son liked his method of teaching and was very comfortable. He had a better understanding of what was needed and expected to complete his assignment. Thanks Tom.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took ordinary differential equations, I and II, and partial differential equation. I received an A for all classes. I used differential equations, in undergraduate and graduate physics classes, including electrodynamics, quantum mechanics and plasma physics. I have used diff eq in my plasma and astrophysics research, which included obtaining numerical solutions using computers.
