About Misty

I am in my mid 30s and I have been a teacher for 13 years, mostly in a Special Education setting. I have experience as a full time teacher, part time teacher, coach, home teacher, and substitute. I have been tutoring for 6 years and am available mostly in the afternoons, and a few weekends.

My strongest subject is Math (up to Algebra).

I currently am the full-time Resource Teacher in a PK-8 private school in Hollywood, MD. I hold a Professional Teaching Certificate and a dual Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary and Special Education.

I can teach students who are having a tough time with specific skills such as executive functioning skills, math fact memorization, phonics, reading comprehension, study skills, organizational skills, and time management. Some parents just want me to be there to help their child with homework, and that's fine, too!

I cannot tutor in houses with cats, due to an allergy. I am friendly, reliable, patient, flexible, and professional! I hope to meet with you soon.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I just completed the 30-hour comprehensive training for the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education & Orton-Gillingham Approach this past summer. I was given the tools to incorporate multi-sensory strategies into an existing literacy curriculum in my school. This program is recommended for children with a specific learning disability in reading (dyslexia).

Special Needs

I have a dual Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education. I have worked as a Special Educator for 10 years now, both in public and private schools. I have a close family member with a moderate developmental disability and she's the reason I became a Special Education Teacher. I am patient & understanding in my teaching methods.
