Hi, my name is Dan and I am interested in helping you learn Spanish! I have a graduate degree in Spanish language and literature, and not only have I taught Spanish to undergraduates in a formal setting (as a TA), I have also tutored several students in Spanish over the last few years. The students I worked with were in middle school, high school and college-level Spanish classes, and I'm excited to be able to work with students at these and other levels, as well. I have English teaching experience in China, Qatar and France, too, so if you are interested in brushing up on your English grammar, I can help out with that, too! These days I work as an educator here in Montgomery County, and I love having the opportunity every day to help my students succeed academically. Meeting students where they're at is key to helping them achieve academic success, and I enjoy that challenge with both younger and adult students. In short, my formal academic training and professional experience will help you meet your goals, whether it's to pass a single test, improve your grades consistently throughout the academic year, or to learn language skills for business or pleasure.
I have an MA in Spanish Language and Literature from a university in New York, and I also lived in Costa Rica for a total of two years while taking classes as a study abroad student. I am currently studying to take the DELE exam in November. I will take the C2 level, which is the highest proficiency a non-native Spanish speaker can achieve (in terms of being awarded an official diploma from a Spanish institution). I am excited because not only do I get to take the most comprehensive Spanish test in my whole life, but also because I get the chance to keep my Spanish language books cracked open for months as I review, review, review. All of these experiences together mean that regardless of your level of Spanish or your reason for studying Spanish, I will be happy to use all of my knowledge of the Spanish language to help you succeed in meeting your goals!
One of my undergraduate majors was English, and so I have extensive experience in formal writing in English. I also have taught English to speakers of other languages in Qatar, China and France, and so I am familiar with the teaching of English grammar to students of all age levels.
I have a minor in history, and am an avid reader of history nonfiction books. I've also had the good fortune to be able to have lived in several different countries, and that has added to my knowledge of history and geography.
Thank you for taking the time to read my profile. If you have any questions for me, about my own profile or about how I can help you meet your educational goals, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. I look forward to hearing from you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
