About Steven

Bio

I have been teaching and performing for many years. I remember very clearly when I began the study of guitar, at the age of 8. I remember the challenges, as well as the joys, that come with the study of a musical instrument. I therefore understand, and am able to address, the challenges students face in trying to improve their knowledge and skill in studying a musical instrument, improving their writing, or any other subject.

While my teaching experience is primarily in guitar and music, my degree is in philosophy, a subject which is very writing-intensive. In addition to editing and writing experience with local newsletters and in closed captioning, I have provided ESOL tutoring for foreigners learning English at the college level. I am continuously engaged in writing projects, and consider it very important to help others improve their writing wherever such an opportunity presents itself.

Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy; post-graduate coursework in editing; essays and articles written for newsletters; years of closed captioning editing and daily news transcription and editing experience

Years of professional experience performing as a classical guitarist, including solo guitar recitals and duets with flute violin and clarinet; college coursework completed in music theory and history; many years as a guitar instructor, including Dale Music Co. and Montgomery College Music Department, as well as out of home music studio

I look forward to finding out exactly what your educational goals and needs are, and to determining whether the tutoring I provide would align well with them. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Spanish

I was exposed to Spanish initially in elementary and middle school. I subsequently completed 16 credit hours of Spanish courses prior to completing my Bachelor of Arts degree, consistently maintaining A's for each of them. I have since worked as a Spanish bi-lingual customer service representative, and have also worked on Spanish closed captioning and translation. My wife is Peruvian, so I have had considerable practice in refining my fluency in speaking Spanish. As a classical guitarist, I have been especially motivated to research much of the guitar's history relating to its Spanish origins, in the original Spanish texts. I have also been teaching guitar classes in Spanish for quite some time.

I have been performing as a professional classical guitarist for over 25 years. I have at least 15 years of experience teaching guitar, including teaching at Dale Music Co. and Montgomery College Music Department as an adjunct guitar instructor. I am currently on the faculty of the Maryland Music Academy as a guitar instructor. I started guitar lessons when I was 8 years old, and have studied with well known concert guitarists. I have performed in master classes with internationally recognized guitarists, have given solo guitar recitals in several concert halls, as well as performed in international music festivals. I have made several guitar transcriptions of classical composers, have written guitar-related articles, and have released two CDs of solo guitar music.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I have been teaching classical guitar for over 15 years, with music theory integrated into the lessons. I have taken several music classes at the college level, including a course in harmony with George Washington University's Composer-In-Residence Robert Parris (1924 - 1999). I have continuously expanded my knowledge of music theory over the years through extensive reading. I have also written several guitar transcriptions of music from other instruments, as well as composed music for guitar.

Expert Knowledge and Teacher

Adult student starting without prior guitar experience. Steven taught all the basics of classical guitar playing including the mechanics, techniques, and reading notes and fingering. He teaches in a step-wise manner to develop certain skills first and then layers on additional skills. Steven is encouraging and reinforces the lessons. He sets up realistic lesson plans at the level of the student (individualized lesson plans). He is also flexible with scheduling when I needed to cancel lessons. I would definitely recommend him to other students seeking guitar lessons.
