Greetings. I am a PhD organic chemist with years of experience as a teaching assistant, lab supervisor, professor, and tutor for both undergraduate and graduate level classes. I have experience in synthetic organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, bioorganic chemistry (peptide chemistry, nucleic acids, etc.) and have applied my research to many different areas (cancer, HIV, gene therapy, electrochemiluminescence probes, et al.).

I enjoy working with students of all ages/aptitudes (high school students struggling to get through the class all the way up to college students just looking to boost their grades) and have spent many hours thinking about the pedagogy of chemistry. I have taught General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry I and II at the college level, and I firmly believe I can help anybody to not only understand the chemistry fundamentals necessary to excel academically but also apply their new found grasp of chemistry to impact their desired career (research, medicine, engineering, etc.). The perspective gained from understanding the underlying chemistry can add remarkable clarity to any number of other areas of inquiry.

Chemistry

Chemistry

As an undergraduate, I was a teaching assistant for general chemistry, physical chemistry (both thermodynamics and quantum mechanics) and quantitative analysis. I have taught general chemistry specifically at the college level. I have tutored students, including extensively in the last two years, currently taking honors chemistry, AP chemistry and various College level General Chemistry courses. I put a heavy emphasis on understanding the concepts and constantly relating the problems, questions, equations, etc. to previously learned fundamentals.

Organic Chemistry

I have a PhD in organic chemistry from Northwestern University. As a teaching assistant while at Northwestern, I instructed undergraduate organic students for the lab portion of Organic 1 and Organic 2, as well as assisted in the teaching of the graduate course Physical Organic Chemistry. My graduate work was mostly in synthetic organic chemistry with the post doctoral fellowship (NIH) focusing on bioorganic and physical organic chemistry. Since then, I have taught both Organic 1 and Organic 2 as an adjunct chemistry professor at the college level. Overall, I have instructed, assisted or tutored in this subject for over 17 years.

Energetic and Thoughtful

Ethan is a fantastic tutor with high energy level and meticulous preparation. Within a couple of sessions, he was able to fundamentally reorient my son's approach towards chemistry as well as give a huge boost to Alex's confidence. We very much enjoy working with Ethan and would highly recommend his teaching.

patience goes a LONG way!

Ethan is amazingly gifted. Not only in Chemistry but with teaching. He has the ability to frame things in a different light so as to help you make sense of them in your own way. Chemistry has been the bane of my existence, but slowly I'm beginning to open up to it. This is all thanks to Ethan! He's never made me feel stupid, even when he has to get back to basic algebraic fundamentals. I am very, very grateful!

He made it easy to learn

I worked with my chem teacher who showed me how to solve one problem. I worked with Ethan and he showed me how to solve the problem we were working on BUT also explained "the why" much better. Knowing "the why" gives me a method/technique/skill/approach to solve other problems as well.

Knowledgeable and patient

Ethan takes the time to make sure you understand the material you need to know. He also does his best to accommodate you when you need help at last minute. Definitely recommend him!!!

Knowledgeable and Explains it well

My daughter says that Ethan really explained things well to her. Sometimes the tutors can be so smart that they cannot get down on someone else's level. Ethan is so patient and speaks slowly so you can absorb the material. We really appreciate his help!!

Very patient

I am a very slow learner and most tutors get very frustrated with me for that reason. This is actually the only tutor I found in chemistry that has really helped me in improving my overall performance, not only in my chemistry but all classes.

Knowledgeable tutor

Ethan is very patient and explains all the steps clearly. He definitely knows all his stuff. He also gives other examples to explain a hard question which was very helpful.

My Exam Grade Went Up!

Ethan was so helpful with my Organic Chemistry II class! I started off the semester with a 56 test grade, and he helped me get my next exam grade up to a 92! I finished the class with a B+, after having barely made it through my first semester of Organic Chemistry. I wouldn’t have made it through this course without Ethan’s challenging examples and expert experience with Organic Chemistry.

The ideal tutor

Ethan is the one you want, don’t bother looking further. He will connect with the most reticent child in the most patient and engaging way possible. My daughter in honors chem said “Ethan teaches me more in 5 minutes than my teacher did the whole week”.

A great Chemistry tutor!

Ethan Englund stepped-in late in the school year to help my son with AP Chemistry. He was patient and, when the material didn't "register", would try different approaches until it made sense. He is a first-rate tutor!
