About Irina

I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, and I am currently working on obtaining a teaching certificate for MCPS.

I have over 6 years of experience tutoring math, physics, chemistry and biology. I also have extensive experience (3+ years) of SAT and ACT prep.

I am particularly adept at breaking down complex ideas and concepts and making them easy to understand. I tend to be very flexible in my lesson plans, and will tailor my teaching to the needs of the student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I have a bachelor's degree in Physiology and Neurobiology from the University of Maryland. I have taken courses in physiology, genetics, cell biology, evolution, development, neurology and behavior. I am also knowledgeable in the connections that the biological sciences make with other disciplines, such as chemistry and physics.

Chemistry

As part of my degree in Physiology and Neurobiology, I have had to take a total of 10 credits in chemistry and biochemistry. The chemistry included 8 credits in physical chemistry and 8 credits of organic chemistry. I also earned 4 credits in biochemistry.

Drawing

I have taken a large number of drawing and painting classes from Montgomery College. I am intimately familiar with all pitfalls related to how people see an object vs. how they think of it, and thus what to look for when trying to actually make one's drawing be life-like. I am able to produce photograph-like likeness of any object, and one of my teachers wanted to put my works in the student art show.

Painting

The most important thing to understand in painting is essentially how to take the three-dimensional image in one's head and transform it into a two-dimensional image that can then be put on a flat surface. I am intimately familiar with all the methods and pitfalls of this process, and can instantly spot what someone is doing wrong when they are trying to paint something and it is not coming out realistic. I have professionally copied several paintings (that were in the public domain) for clients, some with alterations requested and some without. I am in fact able to achieve a photographic level of resemblance between the original painting and my copy of it, as well as produce photographic of any still life one cares to put together.

QuickBooks

I worked as an office manager in a furniture store for more than three years. During that time, I had to use QuickBooks on a daily basis. I have had to use nearly every feature of the program professionally and am thus extremely comfortable with all aspects of it. I have familiarity with QuickBooks up to QuickBooks Pro 2011.

Russian

I am a native speaker of Russian. I was born in Russia, and went to school up to the 6th grade in Russia. To this day, I speak, read and write in Russian fluently, which is due in large part to the fact that my family speaks Russian at home and that we have a large collection of Russian books.

SAT Math

When I took the SAT, I scored in the 92nd percentile for math. I know that the most important and useful skill to develop for the math portion of the SAT exam is to be able to come up with the appropriate mental shortcut for the problem, which requires the ability to see problems from multiple angles. Also, every year I review the current SAT prep materials.

Writing

I have had to write a very large number of essays in my university courses. These have ranged from creative writing style stories of English class all the way to the very rigidly structured lab report. I never have any trouble with knowing what to write and am able to express my thoughts clearly and with whatever level of depth and detail is required.

My daughter was very pleased with Irina. She said Irina was funny and knew how to teach her well. We are looking forward to having her next Tuesday.
