My first tutoring experience took place in first grade when I was asked to assist a newly arrived Vietnamese girl with her English. I myself had learned English when I came to the United States at three years of age and could relate well to some of the issues the newcomer was facing. Perhaps genes played a bit of a role as well as my maternal grandfather had been a teacher in post-war Germany.
Since then, I have tutored and taught foreign languages in a multitude of informal and formal settings, and in various countries. Starting with English and German, and eventually Spanish, French, and Russian, I have enjoyed instructing students of a variety of ages for many years.
In 1990, I complete my bachelor of arts in Russian Studies from George Mason University. In 1993, I returned to the States from a short sojourn in Europe to complete my master's degree in secondary education with a focus on teaching English as a Second Language. After one year of working in a public school setting, I began teaching privately and on a freelance basis for a number of private companies and language schools and the government.
I am also an experienced, freelance translator and interpreter. For the past 20 years, I have worked with a variety of clients, including LanguageOne, Willis Inc., Kyoto News Agency, GEO Centers, MELCO Painting, the German Embassy Washington D.C., Ludwig & Robinson PLLC, Verbalink and a variety of other private clients. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's degree (1996) in Secondary Education and Teaching English as a Second Language from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. I was certified to teach ESL in Virginia in 1996. I have taught ESL to non-native English speakers from a variety of countries and backgrounds as well as TOEFL preparation.
I have a bachelor's degree in Russian language and area studies. I have been speaking Russian since 1990, have Russian relatives and recently received a 3/2+ (speaking/reading) score on the ILR proficiency scale.
I lived in Mexico City for 4 years as a teenager and had 2-3 years of almost only Spanish instruction in school there. I am nearly fluent in Spanish and have kept up my Spanish skills since then by taking courses back in high school and college, by tutoring and teaching Spanish, and by translating.
