About Page

I am a certified English and Special Education teacher who loves to teach students of all ages. I have taught students in primary school, middle school, and high school, as well as adults learning English as a second language. I specialize in all aspects of writing, grammar, reading, literary analysis, and public speaking. I also enjoy tutoring primary students in science, social studies, and mathematics.

My education includes a bachelor of arts degree in English from George Washington University and a master of arts degree in teaching from Johns Hopkins University. Since retiring from a successful career with the Smithsonian Institution, I have been teaching and tutoring for the past six years. The students I've tutored have all improved their reading, writing, and critical-thinking skills significantly, I'm proud to say.

What makes me an excellent English tutor is not only my powerful command of the language, the literature, and all aspects of the writing process, but also my deep respect for my students, my gentle spirit and sense of humor, and my own past experiences as a struggling student who needed the knowledge and support of an outstanding tutor. I have taught and tutored students with a wide range of learning styles and abilities, so I'm happy developing interesting lessons to fit the needs of my individual students.

If you've read my profile and think I might be a good tutor for you, then I encourage you to contact me to set up a free consultation. I can learn about your needs, and you can learn more about what I can offer you as a tutor. If we like, we can schedule lessons at that point.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
