Hello. My name is Anneva. I would love to be your Spanish Tutor.
My background includes a rigorous study of the Spanish Language and Culture in preparation for a two-year stay in Colombia, South America with the Peace Corps. It was there, as a Health Educator, that I taught (in Spanish) in the local public and private Elementary and Secondary schools. I also taught English as a Second Language. Upon my return to the U.S., I passed the State Department's (Spanish) Language Test at a "4", a very high score, and have served as a French and Spanish Interpreter for Delta Airlines, traveling to Spain, Mexico, Belgium and France.
Having taught and tutored Spanish over the past 20 years, I am happy to teach and tutor others in a language that I love. Therefore, they reach their goals of speaking and understanding the beauty of the language and culture through the eyes of someone who has been there.
I am a very passionate and dynamic tutor, with a keen interest in conversation and pronunciation. While Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn, it also has its challenges; which is why I find it so much fun to share. I am always looking for ways to make the learning fun as well as challenging. My students appreciate the time I take with them, listening and providing examples and tools to help them with every challenge. My main goal is for the student to 'converse' as well as to understand what another person is saying, in Spanish, with confidence. We learn the grammar as well, but, it's not boring. I have taught and tutored children as well as adults. Having travelled throughout South and Central America, I also love to share information about the Hispanic Culture.
I am currently a (substitute) teacher at a local Bi-lingual Elementary School. Thus, I am aware of the tools needed to teach at this level. I also speak Spanish daily with many of the Hispanic parents.
Another part of the teaching/tutoring component that's important to me is learning about the Hispanic culture. Thus, we generally will talk about and look at some of the word differences and interesting cultural habits of various countries in the Spanish-speaking world. When and where feasible, I love to take my students to venues where Spanish is spoken, in order to allow them to "use" what they have learned in a "real world" situation.
I am looking forward to our tutoring sessions.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have done graduate work in Health Promotion Counseling; and I am an Holistic Health Counselor, certified by the AADP (American Association of Drugless Practitioners). As such, I have completed a two year course of study in Nutrition and Counseling at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City (2006).
As part of the course work, I travelled to India, where I studied in-depth counseling techniques, and Ayurveda, the 5,000 year old Indian traditional way of life. These studies included Ayurveda principles and cooking classes.
I now teach nutrition and help clients to understand it's value to a healthy lifestyle through healthy cooking classes and a weight loss program.
I also write a nutrition column for a local newspaper in the town of Shelter Island, NY.
My tutoring methods are very simple, people friendly and fun. The cooking classes are hands-on and very interactive.
I am currently teaching at a Bi-lingual school in Washington, DC. I teach reading to students who speak other languages, as well as English-speaking students. It's a delight to see their confidence grow when they learn a new concept, or understand what they are reading!
I am a creative and passionate tutor in the Spanish language. I love to bring the language to life for my students. Conversation is such a big part of language learning. I ensure that pronunciation is done correctly and that the student can understand as well as be understood in Spanish.
If appropriate and feasible, we can also visit other venues where the conversation practice becomes more real.
As a teacher in a local school system, I work with children in preschool to 5th grade in reading, comprehension and spelling. It is a delight to see them "get it" and continue to perform well and improve. I allow the student to work at his/her own pace so that they are comfortable with their rate of progress. My relaxed demeanor is very relaxing to the children, and they quickly become open to learning. In terms of both the spelling and the reading, I think phonics is the better choice for learning.
I have been a writer for most of my life (since I learned how to write with a pencil). I just love to write! From a Health Column in the local newspaper, to stress management and nutrition articles on the web, to poems. I also love to do research for my articles and come up with the most concise, information-packed article possible.
