About Renee

My name is Renee and I am an experienced tutor who focuses on a broad range of subjects. I have recently graduated with my MA in Theatre and Performance Studies from the University of Maryland. For undergrad, I attended Muhlenberg College where I graduated with honors with a major in Theatre and minors in Philosophy and Comparative Religion. My personal research examines the intersection of cultural studies, ritual, grief/trauma, and performance. Currently I am working full time as a subsitute teacher in Frederick county. Within the next year or so, I hope to go back to school to complete my PhD and go on to be a professor. I have a natural ability with teaching and a passion for it. I started teaching my younger brother to read when I was in fourth grade and he was in second. Over time, I also tutored him in study skills, vocabulary, and writing. I have also tutored in reading, writing, history, and basic math. I particularly specialize in helping write essays and research papers. In high school, I tutored in English and history as part of National Honors Society. In college I served as an academic mentor for one of my sorority sisters and I was responsible for keeping her motivated and providing study support as well as advice on course selections. While at college I took a well rounded selection of liberal arts courses. I graduated magna cum laude and was a member of two honor societies. I have worked as a general camp counselor responsible for a cabin of girls age 13-16 and was the head drama instructor as well as an arts and crafts instructor. Upon arrival in Seattle, I spent the summer working as a teaching intern for Taproot Theater. I taught acting, movement, musical theater, film, improv, and theory. I was an AVID academic coach at Highland Middle School and Interlake High School in Bellevue. I started tutoring through Wyzant in 2010. I have worked with students of all ages in a variety of academic disciplines including English, biology, human geography, history, government, anthropology, and general study skills/organization. My specialty is teaching writing. I am available to come to your house, or meet you at a location of your choice. Additionally, I offer consultation sessions over email. My schedule is flexible and I take on both long term and short term students. As a tutor I am patient and encouraging and am able to help others focus on and even enjoy their studies. Each lesson is personalized to meet the needs of the student. I am fun and laid back but work hard and help others do the same. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I began tutoring both American and world history when I was in high school. I took all honors and AP History classes and excelled in my course work. I strongly believe in the importance of studying history and learning from the past. I also know many students find history boring or difficult to relate to. I specialize in helping to bring history to life.

College Counseling

I worked as a tutor for the AVID program which prepares students for college. I specialize in helping with applications and college essays. I can offer guidance in researching and selecting schools. I can help with building the study skills necessary for success in college.

English

I am adept with helping students grasp literary terms and concepts. I excel in helping students develop their essay writing skills. I can offer both guidance on understanding an assignment and creating a first draft as well as proof reading and perfecting an essay. I have a passion for reading books and writing. I can help instill this in others.

Religion

I have always had an interest in studying other cultures and in particular world religions. In college I self designed a program of study examining the intersection of art and culture in multiple societies. I am interested in how different cultures view the world and how they express those beliefs through cultural norms, ritual, art, and performance. I have studied Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Neopaganism, as well as the religious beliefs of multiple cultural/ethnic groups. In college I double minored in comparative world religions and philosophy.

Social Studies

I have a passion for studying history, world cultures, anthropology, sociology and psychology. In college I double minored in comparative world religions and philosophy. I am particularly interested in analyzing other cultures and time periods to better understand society today and the intersection between human nature and cultural norms. I have experience tutoring middle school social studies and high school history courses (both honors and AP). I can help with understanding the course material as well as expressing that knowledge in essay format.

Study Skills

The key to academic success is developing good time management and strong study habits. In high school and college I took a heavy course load while being involved in clubs and activities. I had to learn how to balance homework and studying with my various activities. Everyone learns differently and I can help students identify study strategies that are effective for them. I can motivate and help students focus and excel in their academics. I teach organization, time management, test preparation, and finding a love for learning.

Writing

I excel in helping students develop their essay writing skills. I can offer guidance on effective research methods, understanding an assignment and creating a first draft, as well as proof reading and perfecting an essay. I tutored writing in high school and college. I know the format for writing papers for a variety of subjects. I can help students find their own voice in their writing.
