About Aliyah

Greetings! My name is Aliyah L. and I look forward to being your potential tutor. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 2007 from the University of Maryland College Park, and my Master's of Business Administration from Strayer University in 2013. I have 10 years of teaching experience in grades 1-5, and have been tutoring since 2004.

I believe that tutoring is a great way for students to improve because of the one-to-one attention that a child receives. This allows me to cater specifically to their needs and differentiate instruction as necessary. Also, the convenience and flexibility of tutoring will allow the student to receive instruction at a time that works best for them.

I allow students to have productive struggle to discover the answers to problems. In doing so, students are able to take charge of their own learning and begin to add to their personal toolbox of Math strategies. I also encourage students to find multiple ways to solve problems to improve their conceptual thinking.

In teaching Reading, I seek to dispel the myth thought by many students in grades 3-5 that being able to reading is solely saying the words on a page. I help them to understand that good readers also truly comprehend a text, and are constantly reflecting on what they are reading. Making mind movies, summarizing, questioning the text, and making connections are just a few of the strategies I teach students to use to improve their understanding of what they are reading.

I teach in a manner that allows students to constantly build on previous skills through hands-on learning and discovery (as previously mentioned). By teaching using real-world examples, my students make deeper connections to the material, and are more likely to work "smart" toward solving a problem.

I seek to build personal relationships with students because children who don't feel supported and respected will not learn. I listen to the needs of the children and their parents and effectively communicate progress that is made or challenges that we will continue working on. I also utilize various high-interest resources that engage students and build their intrinsic motivation to succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

From 2013-2015 I worked as a Professional Development Lead Teacher in Prince George's County, training teachers on Common Core Math implementation in grades K-5. In addition, I am a certified teacher (1-6 grades) who uses the Common Core Stated Standards in Reading and Math to deliver instruction to 5th grade students.
