About Doh

Hello,

I am a private studio producer who studied film in college, and wound up working at a TV station. I have been using Macintosh OS daily for over ten years, and have even lost some of the abilities associated with the Windows platform. Growing up, I lived in a French-speaking country and received all my grade-school education in French. I can help you improve your French and English speaking, reading, writing, spelling, proofreading, vocabulary, grammar, and conjugation.

In the past decade I have taught several students how to operate video production equipment in a studio environment, both in my personal business, and as part of the technical ministry of large church: cameras, lights, microphones, video mixers, sound mixers, and editing software. Because most of the equipment runs on a Macintosh platform, I had taught how to use Macs too. In addition, I now teach business owners how to look best on camera and use video to enhance their public image. During my college and high school days, I was busy tutoring French, English, Writing, and helping fellow students prepare for and ace tests.

How I teach depends on the learner’s interest. Back when I was in school, I realized that I performed terribly in a subject, but performed remarkably well in the same subject the following year, when I had a different teacher. In time, I observed the same behavior in some of my classmates, and finally figured out why: some teachers who were passionate about their subjects did not bother to find out what their students were passionate about! Since I started teaching, my focus has been to find out from the students things that capture their attention or motivate them, and build from there (it is easy, only if you are looking). I think less of what I want, and more of what students want, and blend what needs to be learned with what is of interest to them. For example, when teaching French, I would start by asking students about their favorite movie (or sports, etc.) and we can spend the whole hour talking about that movie, while learning new vocabulary and perfecting grammar. As a result, students remain engaged, and by the end of the session, they want to learn more.

With subjects that are more technical, the process is similar, and the goal is to keep students involved and hands-on. For instance, during video editing or film production, I let my students choose a topic or story that is of importance to them, and let them bring it to life, and I guide them on how to adequately achieve that. Here again, I draw on my experience: all the classroom education I received was simply a foundation for the real-life learning that I gained when I started working on productions. So I want my students to get mostly immersed into real projects, then I add the pertinent knowledge during the process. I have found out it’s almost impossible to teach young students in any other fashion.

Teaching really brings me joy, because it helps me discover things that I did not know about myself. I learn alongside my students, just like I’ve done while tutoring in college and high school. I really love it when my students come to the same realization: that they are discovering more about themselves, because they are using real-life topics and incorporating the learning process into it. Just like in the Montessori system.

Should you have any questions, please connect with me, and I will do my best to clarify any issues. My goal is really to support anyone who needs help. I understand knowledge is powerful, and I would not be who I am now, if it weren't for the support of those who came before me. Therefore, I am always willing to give someone a hand-up.

Thank you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

Even though I've been speaking English fluently for the past two decades, I spent my childhood and went to grade school in a French-speaking country. After receiving excellent results on my TOEFL, I did not need to take ESL classes when I came to the USA for college. Rather, I enrolled in, and started classes the day I walked on campus. Because I love studying language, I still spend significant time perfecting my skills.

Film

I was formally trained as a film producer and director. I have worked on several movie sets, as director and producer. I find myself constantly teaching young people about the art and science of film, so they can understand that what makes a difference in this field is not the latest 'cool gear' they've just bought. My experience has shown that a person with excellent training and basic gear will produce better films than a person with expensive gear and inadequate training.

French

Even though I've been speaking English fluently for the past two decades, I spent my childhood in a French-speaking country and received my entire grade-school education in French. During those days, I participated in French writing competitions and received various awards. I spent significant time studying and perfecting the language, and used dictionaries and encyclopedias extensively.

Macintosh

I have worked exclusively on a Macintosh platform daily for the past decade. I have received training regarding Mac-based software such as Adobe Premiere and Apple FinalCut Pro. In my workplace, I am constantly showing people how to use a Mac. And when no one can figure out what is wrong, I am usually the one they go to for an answer.

Proofreading

As a child spelling champion, I have always had a passion for studying and perfecting my use of languages. I now still use dictionaries and encyclopedias extensively, and when I am done proofreading a passage, there is usually nothing left for the spellchecker to highlight. I am so passionate about excellence, that I even correct other people's grammar and vocabulary without being asked.

TOEFL

Even though I've been speaking English fluently for the past two decades, I grew up in a French-speaking country and received my entire grade-school education in French. Before coming to college in the USA, I had to pass the TOEFL, and received a score of 270/300 (5/5 on essay). I still spend significant time studying and perfecting my language skills, with the use of dictionaries and encyclopedias.

Video Production

My education includes film and TV production, and my main occupation is to run a private TV production studio. In that setting, I've helped numerous businesses produce compelling video advertising messages, field productions, and live events (multiple-camera, as seen on TV) to be broadcast and streamed live online. I've taught several technicians and producers on the art and science of video production. I really have been in the video production industry for the past 2 decades, doing everything form weddings to live shows, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

Vocabulary

As a child spelling champion, I have always had a passion for studying and perfecting my use of languages. I now still use dictionaries and encyclopedias extensively, and when I am done proofreading a passage, there is usually nothing left for the spellchecker to highlight. I am so passionate about excellence, that I even correct other people's grammar and vocabulary without being asked.
