About Robert

I have a PhD from Howard University. I have been an adjunct professor for more than 10 years and I have been a tutor for the last four years. My teaching and tutoring philosophy is to empower and teach students how to think critically through active student participation which is guided by the professor. My objective is to create a learning environment which embraces students in a way that stimulates their curiosity and increases their willingness to actively participate in the learning process.

My desire is to stimulate the thirst for knowledge and self-improvement. As competition for employment opportunities continues to become more keen, the students who are the most prepared for the opportunities of the 21st century are also the most likely to gain access to jobs that pay living wages and beyond. My passion is assisting students to achieve this outcome and this is why I enjoy tutoring.

I implement my teaching philosophy in the classroom and I remain current with changes in the field of sociology, as these relate to social changes and innovations and enhancements in pedagogy.

My goal is to encourage students' commitment to lifelong learning. I also believe that higher education is an important tool for success in the 21st century which should be used in tandem with other skill sets to facilitate superior academic, work and life achievements.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I hold a Ph.D. in medical sociology, I have been an adjunct professor for more than a decade and I have tutored students for four years. The National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) defines social studies as "the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence." A foundational discipline within social studies is sociology, which is the systematic study of society. In social studies tutoring sessions, I meet students where they are, academically, and empower them by: (1) showing sensitivity and respect; (2) building a rapport; (3) stimulating intellectual curiosity; and (4) encouraging a level of student engagement that facilitates academic success.

Sociology

I hold a Ph.D. in medical sociology, I have been an adjunct professor for more than a decade and I have tutored students for four years. I have taught Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of the Family, Urban Sociology, Medical Sociology, American Society and Social Problems. I have tutored students in each of these courses. My teaching and tutoring philosophy is to empower and teach students how to think critically through active student participation which is guided by the professor. My objective is to meet students where they are, academically; create a learning environment which embraces students and stimulates their intellectual curiosity; increase their willingness to actively participate in the learning process; and promote academic excellence.

Writing

I hold a Ph.D. in medical sociology, I have been an adjunct professor for more than a decade and I have tutored students for four years. As a person who has taught a course in Writing Skills and who is a published author, there is a growing need to strengthen the writing skills of more students. Effective writing can be very rewarding but it requires an understanding and application of the mechanics of good writing.
