About Julio

I have taught American Sign Language (ASL) for over 25 years, at different colleges and universities. At another job, I worked one-on-one with interpreters seeking to upgrade their ASL skills from one level to another. I have also worked with a small group of Deaf students needing to become more fluent in ASL. I enjoy working with people of all ages, and my students enjoy working with me too! I work well with people and can adjust my lessons for signers at different levels of aptitude.

Since ASL is a non-verbal language, I don't use paper and pen, or voice, while teaching. I teach through visual cues from the environment and use a combination of gestures, pantomime and signs to get my ideas across. After some possible initial adjustments, my students are very successful in learning ASL through this approach. Not only do students learn to sign themselves, they also develop excellent ASL-reading skills. I use email for other needs, such as scheduling and other questions. When with my students, face-to-face, the only way I allow communication is through ASL.

I am Deaf and use ASL as my primary mode of communication. As such, I am very knowledgeable about what ASL is and how to break it down. I have also taken workshops in honing my teaching skills in ASL. My wife and our three children are also Deaf!

Feel free to contact me regarding any questions you may have. My schedule is rather flexible and I can work with you in setting up mutually agreeable times to meet. I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, but am flexible about making up lesson times.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Sign Language

I have taught ASL for 25 years (at Brigham Young University, Salt Lake Community College, University of Utah and Utah Valley University). I have also worked with interpreters in upgrading their ASL skills, and with Deaf youth who need to become more fluent in their language. I use visual cues from the environment and gestures, pantomime and/or signs to communicate; in other words, no voicing will be allowed. This not only helps students learn to sign, but enables them to read sign as well.
