Goucher College (Russian)
I had always been the kind to seek out a challenge when it came to languages and when I moved from New York to Maryland, I took the chance to study something wholly different from the Romance Languages I knew. My love and interest in Russian was fostered by my high school teacher at the time and was the reason I pursued it further in college, going as far as ensuring that the school I attended had a suitable program available.
During my undergraduate career, I studied abroad in Saint Petersburg for two months during the summer, which was an eyeopening experience. I had access to not only an amazing and strictly Russian education, I had access to all the history and art and culture that the city had to offer. I hope to return some time in the future in order to fully explore what I hadn't had the chance to.
I did an internship in Baltimore City Schools which allowed me to get hands-on experience teaching -- which was furthered beyond that of my peers due to being the sole teacher (as the host teacher had gone on pregnancy leave). I feel that my passion for teaching the language and the culture can help a student feel comfortable in learning a language many find difficult.
The past year I have tutored International students (from China and Singapore). I assisted them with essays as well as short stories by providing feedback and critiques when needed while also showing how best to showcase their ideas regardless of the language restriction.
If you're interested in improving or even refreshing (or starting!) your language skills this year, feel free to contact me (the times at the moment are flexible as well, and based on this summer's work schedule)! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've taken both a writing and speaking proficiency test (which are required in acquiring teaching certifications) with an Intermediate Mid level for writing and Intermediate Low level for speaking (though it is closer to mid level).
